Canteen is one of those places that has a very bland approach to food in my opinion – it’s not that what they serve is bad but just very plain and unimaginative. It’s ok but certainly doesn’t get me excited about coming back when I feel like I could reproduce the same thing at home and probably do better at it.At the spitafields location I feel this heightened by having a detached service that doesn’t really make you feel welcomed.

Poor.. We waited 45 minutes to find out our order wasn’t coming and then when we approached the lady (wearing pink glasses with swirls near lens) she didn’t even offer us an apology. We could’ve just walked out but we thought we’d be polite and told them we had to leave, in return she said ‘That’s ok’ and made it feel like our fault. Terrible people skills and no food means we won’t be going back.also, the idea of the canteen doesn’t work so well when you’re crammed next to strangers. Even just a little bit of space would be nice.
I had breakfast here with a friend this morning. The restaurant building is nice and comfortable but they didn’t serve a veggie full breakfast (although the waitress did make some suggestions on alternatives) which was disappointing. I ended up having the rhubarb compote with Greek yogurt and granola which was ok, nothing special and I felt they skimped on the granola!! And I had toast with that and a drink, all for 9 which I feel was overpriced. The service was fine but the food let them down. I won’t be going back anytime soon.
Better than the rest. A nice way to read the Independent and The Times.. Quality food and coffee in pleasant surroundings. A good jump off point before you hit the Spitalfields markets on a weekend.
Taking the p****. I ordered a main course beetroot, broad bean, pea and cheese salad today. At a price of 9.60 I expected it to be reasonably substantial. Cue a small plate with perhaps 4-5 tablespoons of veg and a few thin shavings of cheese on top – this barely even looked like a small side salad. I can’t believe there was more than about 30p worth of ingredients here, which would make the markup about 3000%. Sent it back and ordered something else. To be fair it was handled gracefully and my replacement meal was offered free, which suggests that the manager quietly agreed the dish was a rip off (I guess this is a franchise and the menu is outside his control). If you play it safe (pies, chicken and chips) you can eat well here, but choose carefully.
Dreadfull Service. Please avoid if you only have one hour for lunch.Service was poor and un attentive, when they were asked to hurry the food order it was met with a surly attitude.They even have the cheek to add a service charge 12.5% to the bill without consent.Food when it arrived was only ok and of only average quality. With such a selection of eateries in the area choose somewhere else
