Decided to celebrate my partner’s birthday by taking her to Hotbox for her special meal. After doing plenty of research i was sure it was going to be good but little did i know how wrong i was. Birthday now in ruins and both very upset. It started out okay until half way through our starter. A group of very loud and roudy drunks were let in and seated directly behind us. I got elbowed in the back as one sat down. Immediately they started shouting, making noises, and hollering at the tops of thier voices! We tried to carry on and enjoy our meal but it was impossible. We could hardly hear each other over the noise and disturbance. We kept looking at each other then over at the staff thinking surely a staff member will move or ask the group to keep it down but no. Staff were standing having a nice chat.Eventually we complained. Oh we cant be responsible for our customers. What? What? Of couse you bloody well can. It’s your restaurant. You are supposed to be ensuring that your paying customers are having a great time. They offered to move us over into another side of the restraunt that had nobody else in it. We refused because why should we be punished and moved out to sit on our own? We were there first and had done nothing wrong. They refused to ask the roudy party to quieten down or move them so we just left, our food half eaten and birthday ruined. Our meal was written off and that’s appreciated but it doesn’t change the fact the meal was ruined. The staff should have acted or not let them in in the first place. They didn’t seem all that bothered. We eat out often. We have been eating out for decades. It’s really not a case that we are moaners or easily disturbed. In all the decades i having been eating out i have never not ONCE had to complain about noise. Sure sometimes people are loud and boisterous but this was just well beyond normal. They were drunk and shouting. The food wasn’t that great either. Our prawn starter needed seasoning and was a bit over. The charred bread tasted of bitter burnt bread. The pulled pork was pretty horrible. The pork had little flavour and again needed seasoning. The the thing was just greasy and needed a vinegary sauce to counter the richness. The beef was better but a bit fatty. Great bark on the meat and very tender but felt it lacked flavour. The restraunt itself is very small and uncomfortable. Guests are seated on wooden benches which are highly uncomfortable at communal tables. Every body is in everyone’s lap. The place is painted jet black. It’s too dark. The staff are poor.So all in all very disappointing. This is one of the very worst restaurant experiences i have ever had. On the train home now. It takes over 1 and a half hours to get home! What a waste!Disgusted.
This place is just so good so come hungry as you will want everything! For drinks get the green bloody mary.It is so good.I got the taco’s for main course which were so delicious and very filling!
With burger joints opening right, left and centre with various levels of quality, my hunt for the best burger in London is always ongoing and my all-time Burger Top 3 keeps on changing every few months whenever a new kid on the block bursts onto the scene. Well, little did I expect that I would find my 2nd favourite burger at Hotbox. Whilst I was perusing the menu, hesitating between the Beef Short Rib, the Dirty Swine Sandwich and the Chicken Belgian Waffle, I had a sudden burger crave when it was served at the table next door. Although the burger combination itself is pretty standard (dry aged patty, smoked pork belly & a fried egg), the execution is just on the money: a lightly browned brioche bun (that crunch really makes a difference, trust me), a perfectly grilled beef patty (with that delicious BBQ taste, such a key flavour enhancer), impeccably smoked pork belly (with that all important crispy texture I hate chewy bacon) and to bind everything together, a runny fried egg. It really hit the spot and although slightly more pricey that most burger joints (12), its definitely worth the extra. So all in all, whilst I cant comment on the rest of the menu, I would say that if you fancy a tasty burger, this is a no brainer: it really packs a burger suckerpunch sending you straight into a satisfying afternoon food coma and meat sweat. It now ranks second in my all time Burger Top 3, sandwiched between my all time favourite Bukowski (The Fat Gringo) and Honest Burgers (both Brixton branches). Go EAT a burger at Hotbox folks, the burger photo I posted says it all non?
