I visited Hungry Donkey for a quick takeaway lunch a few days ago. It was rainy and quite miserable, therefore I was on the lookout for some warm and comforting food and this place seemed like a great idea. The atmosphere was welcoming and the interior is quite nice. The two staff that I dealt with were very friendly. I chose to have the chicken souvlaki wrap to takeaway and while I was waiting for the wrap to be prepared, one of the guys bought me a glass of water without me asking for it which I thought was a nice gesture so a plus point on the service.I fell in love with souvlaki wraps a few months ago during a visit to Olive Oil & Oregano so had high expectations. However, my chicken souvlaki wrap didnt disappointed as the flavours were very well done. The only negative point thing is the portion size – I wish the wraps were slightly bigger as I could have easily eaten atleast another half of that wrap. Overall, lovely place with good and an even better service! I would definitely consider visiting again!

I celebrated my birthday here after no one else would accommodate my booking of a 15+ girl’s brunch! I bet they couldn’t handle all these girls in one place haha but hey! Hungry Donkey came to my rescue and boy am I glad they did! Stalked them on Instagram and was drooling over their food photos of delicious Greek food. It’s easy on the pocket and the food is mouth-watering! It was worth it and I would highly recommend anyone to go here for brunch, lunch or dinner! Opa!! foodiarieslondon.com

I’d love it if my Premium Bonds won me more than 25 but I’m willing to accept the small life wins I get here and there. One recent brush with luck was via Instagram when I won a competition run by modern Greek restaurant, Hungry Donkey, for a free meal. Being local to me in Aldgate, I’d had my eye on their place while it was under construction, so the competition win was the perfect reason to go along, venture inside and sample the food.We arrived for a rather late lunch as so for a while had the almost undivided attention of the staff who were kind enough to talk us through the menu and explain the various dishes. As starters we had the Dakos Barley Rusks, which were not hard rusks as you might expect but soft crumbly rusks like a dense but not heavy bread cake hybrid which served as a base for tomatoes, feta cheese, onion and capers. A less substantial starter of pan-fried saganaki cheese tasted exactly like a toasted cheese sandwich, with amazing crispy edges.I had the Greek Sausage Plate Me Up which was a plate loaded with tomatoes, onion, Greek sausage (boar, pork and leek), chunky chips and tzatziki. A kind of light and summery version of a full English breakfast, it was lovely and made me feel like I should be somewhere more exotic than the backstreets in Aldgate.Try as he might, my boyfriend couldn’t make his Vegetarian Souvlaki Pita Wrap with Halloumi look photogenic (although he assured me it was delicious and well-filled), but you can catch a glimpse of it below peeping out from behind his side portion of hand cut chips and feta.We hit a change in shifts and so had a bit of a lull after our mains, during which time I had to do some convincing to get my boyfriend to share a dessert with me as I had my eye on the Manouri Cheesecake. Unlike many cheesecakes which only taste sugary and sweet, this has a sweet top layer (topped with a sprinkling of crumble) but a substantial layer that has a proper taste of the Manouri cheese. It was a massive piece and we really did only need the one dessert between two of us.If in the shadow of Grexit you’re seeking a risk-free slice of Hellenic life, Hungry Donkey Greek restaurant is a light-drenched escape from they grey streets of East London. notquiteenough.co.uk
