Wonderful brunch with very fresh orange juice and some of the best poached eggs of my life – I’ve never seen such yellow yolks. Great location right off Brick Lane, and a wonderful open, airy interior. Highly recommend for a quiet brunch away from the bustling curry houses. theswindian.com

Very original interior, excellent food (not the usual London fare but not super original either) with mainly small plates to share. Only negative is the smell of the paper used for the menu!

As well as Ashkenazi influences, the menu includes Southern European and Middle Eastern food with choices of bar food, an a la carte menu or a ‘workers lunch.’ The head chef is Louis Solley, who previously worked as head chef at Ottolenghi in Notting Hill. Probably the most famous Israeli chef in the UK, Ottolenghi explodes traditions by combining the food from his native Israel with different flavours and concepts from the Mediterranean, Middle East and Asia. Chef Solley is doing something similar here, it’s not a menu that’s totally straightforward. My rather simple starter was sardines on toast. Now Israel isn’t necessarily somewhere that you think of as a culinary epicentre but I love the food there! Mr S and I have been to Tel Aviv a few times as our brother-in-law is from there originally. What I love about the food is the very simple ingredients that are used but the freshness of the flavours and the strong Mediterranean influences. In Tel Aviv, some of the best food I’ve had is a simple fish dish served on the beach with a good whack of chilli and garlic served with oil and hunks of fresh bread. My starter reminded me of those simple fresh flavours and I absolutely loved it.Karen and Liesel both started with grilled manouri with cherry tomatoes and sweet herbs. The ladies loved how the salty flavour of the Greek cheese combined with the beautifully fresh tomatoes. Plus it just looked like sunshine on a plate! silverspoonlondon.co.uk

There is very little reason to head into the Brick Lane area in the morning – to say that it is quiet is an understatement with only the litter on the streets providing proof of any previous life; it is a world apart from the usual hustle and bustle which lines these streets. But that has all changed now because it is here on this morning that I’ve discovered a place called Jago. Nestled in the heart of Shoreditch in the foyer of the creative hub Second Home, Jago is billed as an all-day restaurant with a menu which focuses on European, Middle-Eastern and Ashkenazi influenced cuisine which is not surprising given this is the brainchild of a chef who had previous experience at Ottelinghi. Today, I visit in search of breakfast and scanning through a straightforward menu, settled on the grilled challah with labneh (greek yogurt) & honey and the baked eggs with sliced beans & peppers. Food was all very good but as you probably could’ve guessed, the highlight dish was the baked eggs which, for all its simplicity, was really a beautiful looking and tasting dish. However, be warned that this does take some time to prepare and if you don’t have 20 mins to spare, this order is not for you. Both coffees ordered (a flat white and Americano) were good and rounded out which was, on aggregate a very solid meal and definitely worth a visit for those looking for a casual start to the day in the City.
