If you want to try the fusion of thai and Indian, try this place. Their Dal/currey and lamb are too good.. Do not forgot to try the Chutney they provide with Samosa.I am quite a regular visitor of this place whenever i am in London.. Not all food here taste that good, but I know what to order here and they are best in that..Only issue here is seating not good and too much of rush during lunch time..
After hearing great stories about this hidden gem and its long lunchtime queues, one friday afternoon I decided it was about time I discovered what this place had to offer. I was expecting a full house at the restaurant with huge queues so it was quite a surprise when the place wasn’t as busy, especially for the takeaway. But then again, I visited the place at 1.30ish so might have just missed the rush. To keep things nice and simple, the main courses are all priced at 5. I chose the Matsaman beef curry with a garnish of carrots. The beef was lovely however felt that the carrots garnish spoilt the overall taste so perhaps that wasnt a wise choice. However, portions are very generous. The staff/owners offer a friendly and quick service. Overall, Mama Thai offers good value of money therefore I am sure I will be back to try their chicken curry soon which is apparently their most popular option.
This place is popular with lunchtime office workers so we went at 13:45 after the crush. No problem getting a table at that time.Mama Thai used to be a streetfood stall in Spitalfields market, but after the refurbishment and consequent rent hike she moved premises to a small shop on Toynbee Street. It’s still essentially a market stall with respect to the food. A huge portion of steamed rice and two curries for 5. One pound less if you take two vegetarian options. Not the best Thai food by a long shot, but passable, cheap and lots of it.I had the spicy lamb curry and dahl. The dahl was quite flavourful, in a yellow curry and garnished with fried onions. The lamb was a little bland but rescued by a generous garnish of fresh coriander and the good chilli oil available on the condiments table. My companion had the beef curry and mixed vegetables in a curry sauce. His beef curry was more complex, but my dahl did hold up better for having been kept warm than his mix of peas, beans, onions and carrots. Both of our braised meat dishes were tender. We only managed to eat two thirds of our lunch. Next time I want to try the fried noodles and fish cakes.
