Unfortunately just not a great dining experience. The pie I ordered was biscuity and tasted like it hadnt seen an oven or anything other than a microwave. My wifes meatballs were also straight out of a packet. Nothing remotely fresh. Atmosphere wanting also. A lot of better options nearby.

The Dispensary is located in a delightful grade 2 listed building, first built in 1858, which oozes charm and gentle sophistication and this continues inside with dark wooden furniture, a dazzling chandelier and some interesting artwork on the walls. The menu is pared down but covers all the bases and offers something’s for everyone at a reasonable price. Our party of six ate various dishes and all left satisfied with the food.Of course I went for the burger, and a fancy one at that – Stilton & bacon homemade ground steak burger with truffle and Parmesan triple cooked hand cut chips. A mouthful to say and even more so to eat as the burger is huge. It’s served medium rare as requested and arrives speared with a steak knife on a chopping board with the chips in a cup. Yeah it looks impressive but it’s not easy to eat with a burger this juicy. What’s wrong with a plate? The bun is a light ciabatta style bread, the burger peppery with that rich steak taste, the bacon lightly smoked but full of flavour and the Stilton cheese creamy yet wonderfully pungent. It’s clear that the quality ingredients are fresh and the combination is epic. The chips are simply incredible with the perfect balance of truffle and Parmesan that is moorish in the extreme. Dare I say it, these are the best chips in town. There are some niggles. We all wanted dessert and placed our order yet were told 10 minutes later that they would be served in another 20 minutes. We didn’t hang around and left disappointed. The service is haphazard to put it kindly. Our table was cleared before everyone had finished eating and worst of all my cup of chips were taken away before I’d actually finished. The place was hardly full yet there were long periods where there were no staff to be seen. Some training in the art of service wouldn’t go amiss.Great food but some refinement is required to earn that extra star.
