First and last time in this place. The pub is actually really cool and we were planning to come back as we work around the area and we really enjoyed the food and beers but definetely not after the way the manager treated us. The place was almost empty in a Monday evening apart from us (we were a group of 12 people). One member of our group was asked to go outside as he was rolling a joint. Totally normal, of course, so he did. But after that the whole group was judged by that as we were some kind of criminals. Three of us went outside with him to give him some company and when we came back they have thrown our beers away and the table was empty. When we went to the bar to ask what happened, they said that we had left and there was nothing on the table apart from empty glasses. We should have let the bartender know that we were coming back EVEN when more than half of the group was still in the pub. Luckily for us, we didnt have any bags on the table (as they would have thrown them to the bin, they said) and we had a tab openned, so we still had to pay. They had to discount the last two beers, as the woman was doing an huge favor to us… The manager was incredibly rude with us treating us like we were the most disgusting people of the planet telling the guy who was with her not to talk with us anymore because they dont treat with stoned people. Maybe the beer you threw away was my third 9% beer and I was kind of drunk and not stoned? Maybe we were upset for a treatment we didnt deserve? We work in hospitality as well and as far as I know you dont treat customers like that NEVER even when they have friends smoking marihuana. Sorry but I would recommend this place AT ALL.
The Well & Bucket is cosy. An open plan and punchy style boozer with cool folk. Normally it can be filled to the rafters, but the quiet month of January has been a treat. You get a seat, you take your time to enjoy the drink and a super food menu! They do fresh king prawns which is literally the best i have tasted in London this far. Other delights include a proper seafood platter, mini burgers, chips with gravy and much more. The bar is an island and set in the middle is a mountain of glass bottles lit up with lights like a drinks paradise. The staff are friendly, its all very affordable and it is all perfectly framed by a cool soundtrack of old and new tunes. A delight. cookandpour.co.uk
This was a pleasant discovery I have to say. The place has nice interiors and good vibe. It isnt too expensive and if you re with a big group of people they have some rooms downstairs. Definitely going back!
To beer or not to beerGreat Pub . Good Environment Nice service done by a bar in the center There’s also another bar, more intimate, down stairs and some space outside if you want to have a cigarette and a talk
Last Wednesday I found myself wandering around Shoreditch with nowhere to go. As the resident foodie I had decided to take the night off and passed the task of finding a restaurant over to my friends. That’s how we ended up at the Well and Bucket. The confusing part of the Well and Bucket is that the upstairs and downstairs are 2 separate venues, as we were told numerous times when we tried to take a seat downstairs with our drinks (they’d run out of the drink I asked so I was stuck with an average cider). Actually we had enquired upstairs (after waiting for around 10mins, whilst various staff members piled up dirty glasses in front of us) and been told we could take our drinks down and order food – it seems that even the staff are confused by what Well and Bucket actually is. Downstairs was atmospheric, and considerably less noisy…but about 50% darker. We grabbed a table within one of the alcoves and ordered food. Even though there were 3 of us, we were only brought cutlery for 2 – we asked for more, which seemed to confuse the staff and ultimately left us sharing.Unfortunately all of the sliders we had ordered were too spicy for me to enjoy, but I put that down to my ridiculously low tolerance for spice rather than blaming the food. However our crab fries were tasty and definitely worth indulging in, although it still seems crazy to charge 8.50 for a plate of fries.Overall the service was poor and the food was average at best, so I wouldn’t go back/recommend it. bloomzy.co.uk
I’d been to the Well and Bucket once on a Friday night but I felt like it didn’t give an accurate picture of the pub so I decided to go back again before writing about it. So this is a tale of two visits. The first timeI thought we might have a drink or two at the Crown and Shuttle but in fact, after buying our Field Day tickets from the Owl and the Pussycat (so excited!) we decided to try out the new Well and Bucket at the top of Brick Lane. This is quite a large pub capitalising on the trend for craft beers. It looks like it would have a large beer garden at the back in which to enjoy them but, in fact, all it basically has is a little patio for people to cram into to smoke. The inside is impressive though and I think I would like this pub if I went to it on a weekend. On a Friday night it was packed and packed full of the people who work around there who I’m rather pleased aren’t so prevalent on the weekends. O! where were the hipsters?Downstairs was another world (and a world I didn’t venture into in the end) which is where the cocktails are served. This was a darker, more intimate and plush area. It looks like it needs exploring further from me.The second timeI was rather worried we’d be in for a repeat performance as the sun was blazing and I thought surely there would be loads of people wanting to have a pint in the sun. But it wasn’t like that, perhaps because there isn’t much of a beer garden to speak of. And I did like it more than the last time we were there. We sat in a corner booth and the place had a much more relaxed, less frenetic atmosphere. It felt more like a proper pub. We marveled at the number of beers on the menu, or should I say the prices. One beer was 20 pounds! But, I should point out that it was a 75 cl bottle and almost as strong in percentage as a normal wine, so through those lenses the prices seemed quite reasonable.I ordered a house white which was very pleasant – a chenin blanc I believe, it had a little depth and fruitiness to it. And wasn’t badly priced at 5.50 for a 175 ml.We were heading off to Feast (my third time and just as good as the others) so we didn’t try anything on the food menu. Just another excuse to go back. I love the mix of traditional pub and macabre graffiti they have covering the walls, it’s all a bit Edgar Allan Poe/Dia de los Muertos, which I get a kick out of. jaminaward.wixsite.com
My friends and me made lunch in this place as we decided to go out together considering that the weather was finally good. We shared two seafood platter with half lobster, King prawns and other stuff. Very tasty and enriching but not convinced it deserved an 28 price tag. By contrast the crab salad my friend said was almost sublime, just a little too salty to achieve perfection. All dishes were beautifully presented but as I said something was missing to achieve the perfection.Overall the bill for all we ordered (around 5 courses) was over 100. But this place deserves a try. A good chunk of that money was paying for the the ambience that, in my opinion, was lovely.
