A bit overcrowded at lunch time, but with good reason. Affordable japanese food (the chicken noodle soup – an enormous bowl, I might add – was the perfect comfort food in a cold, grey London afternoon).
When I visited, after walking past it so many times every day, I was surprised at how humble it was.The small venue was quiet when I went for lunch, later than the average lunch crowd though, and I bought gyoza and katsu-don.The katsu was quickly cooked and brought to my table, the gyoza following quickly after.I found the gyoza tough and doughy, and the katsu run of the mill. I’d heard many great things about here so I was a little disappointed but the service and calm atmosphere in the middle of Holborn high street is something quite rare and enjoyable.
Everyday, I’d see long lines outside Japanese canteen on my lunch break, so I thought I’d try it. Wasn’t the best lunch I had. Tasted like regular noodles to me. Had to wait in a long queue and got rushed whilst ordering. Food was overpriced in my opinion but many people didn’t seem to have an issue with that. A very small restaurant with little sitting area. Not the best eating in environment. I probably won’t be returning again.
Thus far I’ve only been here twice for lunch, but needless to say it was so good I came back for the same. The dish – Korean Fried Chicken for 5.95. Indeed, I confess, I could not stop thinking about it when it came to lunchtime that I just had to go back yesterday. With a nice kick to the sauce and a great crunch and portion to the chicken, this rice box meal is great. Other dishes are more expensive – more like 7 or 8, but I’m sure they’re also good as it’s always busy at lunch. Well worth a lunchtime visit. londoncurryblog.com
