The odd-sounding name means Ginger in Swahili (the owners are Kenyan Asians), and the restaurant is just on the Twickenham side of Richmond bridge. The dining room is narrow and long, and in late 2010 underwent a welcome minor refurbishment, which has removed some of the rough edges from the original decor. Waiters are dressed in smart uniforms and the service is efficient and friendly. The menu mixes the familiar with the more ambitious, so you have chicken jalfrezi alongside monkfish curry. The key is the cooking team. At the opening this is where the chef from the ill-fated but excellent Yatra went though he has now moved on, and the sole head chef now is tandoor chef from the famous Bhukara in Delhi. In all, three chefs serve the dining room, which can accommodate up to 60 diners.I have now had numerous meals here and tried many of the menu options. The cooking here is consistently excellent, whether it be tandoori dishes (I even had tandoori duck once), the treatment of vegetables (bhindi is well handled) or main course curries. The naan bread at my last meal was particularly fine, as light and fluffy as you could wish for. The kitchen has a charcoal tandoor as well as a gas-fired tandoor, which is more work for the kicthen but imparts an extra dimension of flavour to the bread which you get in restaurants in India, where charcoal tandoors are much more common. Main course curries can be very rich, but that is about the only minor flaw. Overall this is some of the best Indian cooking in London. andyhayler.com

Disappointing. I don’t often add reviews as a rule but recently decided that since I read them, it is only fair to contribute, I visited Tangawizi a few weeks ago having heard very good things about it, perhaps inflating my expectations. Our go-to Indian in London is usually Noor Jahan, which I find very good, although quite heavy on the ghee. I heard that this restaurant is exceptional in terms if food, plus it apparently uses cholesterol free vegetable oil, so was excited to sample the fare. On entering, I found the decoration perfectly nice for a local neighbourhood restaurant. Nothing special ordered the cheese – mango paneer – for starters. For mains, we had a wide selection. The prawn dish was very unpleasant. The sauce was disappointingly spiced. The actual prawns were also tasteless and rather unpleasant in texture. M and S curry would score infinitely infinitely higher if compared with this dish. The rice was just like low quality microwave rice. Again I have sampled far better microwave rice from M and S or Tilda. There was none of the usual restaurant quality and lightness that I would hope for in a good rice portion. Back to the mains … they were all rather large in terms of portion size, which would have been lovely if they were tasty. The saag aloo was really unpleasant. The potatoes were not cooked perfectly and once again the seasoning was off. In my opinion the food was very disappointing and I would not return. In fact I left my meal and ended up feeling hungry later on that evening, The price was not cheap either, but to be honest even if it had been very cheap I would still have infinitely preferred a microwave curry from any of the high street supermarkets. To be fair the naan breads were very light and tasty and these were the highlight. In addition the manager was charming. On balance I would most definitely not recommend this restaurant to fellow diners.

Dont miss this one if you enjoy Indian cuisine. Starter platter is a must to try. All of the dishes were flavourful and light, very contemporary Indian cuisine, hardly a drop of grease or oil in sight. Presentation was modern, atmosphere was lively yet intimate. Service attentive and knowledgeable. Will definitely go back soon.

Nice owners good service and good atmosphere. Much more classy food than your average curry house. Try the starter platter to wet appetite and then enjoy selecting from a good collection of mains.
