This restaurant has a really nice decor and a large menu, it could be a really great restaurant if it was cheaper and if the staff were better. The staff are really rude and the food is overpriced. You can get much better quality and cheaper dim sum in Chinatown. I have been to the restaurant 3 times over the past 2 years and all times it was empty. I will not be going again. There are much better places to eat in and around Brixton. I don’t see this restaurant lasting much longer.
Difficult to find a good dim sum place outside of central London and even more difficult to find one that serves it in the evening! This little place is a gem. The decor and theme is brilliant but not too loud and the staff are super friendly. The food is an interesting twist on the usual dim sum dishes. I recommend the puffs!
I’d been meaning to head to Courtesan for a while, with it’s huge red exterior it’s hard to miss on Atlantic Rd, but for some reason had never been top of the list. We turned up about 9 on a Wednesday and it there were enough people to make it feel busy but not packed. You can sit in the bar area for drinks and then there’s a bigger restaurant area further back. I= It’s an odd place – the Chinese courtesan theme is apparent but not ridiculous (Bubba Gump springs to mind as an example of a ridiculous theme and it’s nowhere near approaching those depths). There are birdcages dotted around, and the focus of the larger room is a courtesan’s portrait. It;s a funny vibe – not in a bad way, just very slightly odd. We started with Czech beers – I was hot and thristy and it went down a treat. We ordered five dishes between us and they got better and better as they arrived. Szechaun ribs were spicy with lots of meat on them, and not at all dry. Wonton soup was heavenly – rich, flavoursome broth with meaty pork dumplings, I was very close to ordering a second bowl. Crab, chilli and spinach steamed dumplings were good but not enough chilli, although the very potent chilli oil on the table helped. Xiao long bao with lamb were delicious, with soupy centres that flooded out when you put them in your mouth – again, I wanted more. Only negative with those was a couple of them broke as we picked them up so the lovely liquid was unfortunatley lost. Still good though. It all came to about 40 – not bad for a very good feed and 4 beers. Will be back! feedingfranklin.co.uk
Have dined twice at Courtesan, the second time to give them another go to try and persuade me as to their dim sum credentials. The food was okay, certainly not special but the service was on both occasions very ordinary, and actually quite slow. Probably will not be returning.
Me and a friend decided to have dim sum for lunch on a Sunday, as is a usual tradition on a weekend, so we ended up venturing down South to Brixton to try out Courtesan. A bit of an odd location to go for dim sum, but we’re always up to try something (not so) new. It was located about a 5-10 minute walk (depending on your speed!) from the station, and the exterior of the building looked quite old.The interior was made to look like the inside of a traditional Chinese house (or something along those lines…)In a way it was unique, although I’m not quite sure that I was a fan of the haunting painting of a woman’s face on the wall…My friend had made a reservation, just in case, but really there was no need for it, as we were the first table to be seated, and even after a couple of hours there were only three tables filled…There were quite a few unusual looking dishes on the menu, but we decided to play it safe and ordered the typical dishes that we were familiar with. The pork and prawn dumplings were pretty decent, and the pinching crab dumplings had a nice, thin translucent skin. The xiao long bao was unfortunately slightly flimsy and broke each time we tried to pick one up.The king prawn with beancurd cheung fun was quite tasty, as well as the char siu buns.We tried the prawn pheonix nests as it sounded interesting, but really the ‘nest’ was not as ‘refined’ and delicate as we thought they would be – more like a prawn-ball with and outer coating of deep-fried flat noodles. A bit clumsy to be eaten with chopsticks, so we had to use our hands. We didn’t really order much after that as the dishes that we had so far were pretty average. I suppose that, and the odd location doesn’t really make it an ideal destination for dim sum. The waitress who served us that day was really lovely though and food was served quite efficiently. However, I think that I will stick to my usual places around Central London for now. dancing-in-high-heels.blogspot.com
Awful. Avoid and visit instead ANY of the places in the nearby Brixton Village.. Incredibly slow service and average food.
Not bad. Good food I thought, but then I eat weetabix for Sunday lunch most times, really like the atmosphere, kinda opium den meets interior of old ship. Gotta say its a good place to grab a bite with some friends, and get elegantly wasted. 7.5 outta ten
