A bitterly disappointing dining experience, people love the word experience as if eating is comparable to a trip to the moon. Well my ‘experience’ was a disaster and the food was well below the 10 quid that I forked out. I had a rich and rice dish that lacked tofu but had plentiful of the succulent, cheap, plain boiled rice. No flavour in the dish and just tasted like a pot rice. The staff were not engaged with the customer-shoo process and just saw me as a 10 and not a hungry, potential future customer. Top dollar prices for bargain bucket food.

I don’t know much about Malaysian food but I’m very familiar with Indonesian food which is fairly similar. So I had the nasi lemak with fried chicken. The rice didn’t have a strong coconut flavour and the chilli condiment was too sweet which disappointed me. On the other hand, the chicken was tasty and has lots of flavour. Ambience and service were good but I wouldn’t recommend this place for your first try of South East Asian food…

Having recently returned from a trip around south east Asia my wife and I learned to appreciate the unique flavours of Malaysian cuisine. We were really excited to see Rasa Malaysia take up a position in the great eastern market of Westfield, Stratford. The food smelled like the real deal so it didn’t take much convincing for us to try it out for lunch. It was difficult choosing our meals because there was very little description and no pictures to help the untrained eye, if you’re Malaysian this is no problem but even for recent travellers this proved a challenge. We asked a friendly young guy behind the counter for help but he either didn’t know or didn’t understand our questions so we decided to order what we were familiar with. Unfortunately the starter we wanted want available, it would have helped if they had marked unavailable dishes somewhere. For drinks we asked about a few options but they were either out of them or we didn’t understand what they were, again a description on menu or picture would have helped. The staff member seemed eager to help but either didn’t know the answer or didn’t understand us. So we instead focused on the meals and asked if we could have tap water , which is usually no problem in most London restaurants, here however we were denied it. The staff said it was against health and safety rules! This worried me. If the water was unsafe what did they use in the cooking or hand mixed drinks!? After about 15 minutes my Ipoh noodles with prawns arrived, prawn count was a measly 4. My wife’s fried noodles didn’t arrive until 12 minutes after my soup. My ipoh was very mild and lacked the distinct flavours I was used to from my travels. The wife’s noodles were better but suffered from several undercooked inedible noodle strands. No real excuse for undercooking, or the big gap between orders when we saw 2 chefs in the kitchen! Overall a disappointing experience. We could have put much of this down to teething problems if the food tasted great but that was also a let down.
