I visited Oishii on a Saturday night recently and the place was almost deserted – not a good sign. In the past it used to be close to full most nights and you needed a reservation at the weekend but quite clearly this is not the case now. What’s happened? The clues are there….I went for the special tempura to start and it was as good as ever. Prawns, sweet potato, carrots, aubergine and broccoli were all deep fried in fresh batter and served with a soy sauce – it’s simply delicious. This is one of my all time favourite Oriental dishes and I’m glad to say it is as good as it was when I first visited Oishii several years ago. For main I had the Oishii crispy noodles and here’s where the problems begin. The noodles were good, as was the stock and the noodles but what’s the deal with the chicken? Is it even actually chicken?? It had such an odd, rubbery texture that I really wasn’t sure. My companion opted for Bun Ga Nuong and in addition to the distinct lack of peanuts encountered the same issue. My impression is that they have sourced the cheapest chicken meat around and that this is bulked up with water to give it volume but this makes for a less than satisfactory taste experience. Our plates were cleared but we were not offered dessert. In fact after waiting 10 minutes we had to request the dessert menu ourselves despite being one of only 3 couples in the restaurant. I had some sort of frozen toffee icecream which whilst adequate also seemed quite cheap. My companion fared much better, opting for the green tea and black sesame Japanese icecream which tasted fantastic and is not your usual dessert option.Considering the number of people in the restaurant the service should have been much sharper and certainly more attentive. This is a decent local restaurant that with an improved source of chicken and better service could reach the heights again but as things stand it is only good enough.

MSG alert!. As confirmed by the waiting staff most of the menu is laced with MSG … I am really allergic to the stuff and there were about 2 items on the menu that I could actually eat. Baaaaaad, poor quality food disguised with the wonder e number and makes everything taste ‘good’.22 Sep, 2010Really awful sushi. Really disappointed with some sushi I ordered as a takeaway from Oishii last night. Horrid clammy, heavy, starchy rice. Rolls that fell apart with badly cut pieces of salmon with the brown parts still on inside. The Nigiri was no better, with thick uneven pieces of salmon laid over the same incipid rice. Couldnt eat it, money down the drain. This isnt the first time I have had bad sushi from this place but it will be the last. The sushi police should close them down! As a final insult the prices on the website were 25% less than the price I was actually charged. Gutted I wasnt actually in the restaurant so I could have handed the food back and not paid for it. Avoid! Avoid!

Great Local Pan-Asian. This place has been around for a little while now and is probably one of the best places to eat on Streatham High Road. Food is pan-asian with all your old favourites and a similar menu to Wagamama although I would say the food is probably better here. Ebi Katsu are always good – Singapore Noodles are one of my favourites too. Service is always good and friendly too. If you live in the area I would definately recommed it.
