Spread over three floors, The Fable is a large modern restaurant with a fairytale theme. I was expecting the theme to be quite in-your-face and EVERYWHERE. But instead, the contemporary feel of the restaurant combined with the touches of fairytale sweetness creates a really lovely place to eat – and the floor to ceiling windows fill the rooms with light. After checking out the impressive-sounding dishes on the menu, I chose the Seafood Linguine – featuring prawn, squid and mussels in a creamy sauce. It was AMAZING, and definitely tasted as good as it looked. The sauce was beautiful, the pasta perfect and I loved the tastes of the different types of seafood. We were served quickly and attentively, and I really enjoyed my experience eating here. mini-adventures.com
there’s a whole host of brunch spots signed up to the promotion, and sadly for my purse, the majority of them are on my ‘must go to’ list. but the one that stuck out the most and got me the most excited was the fable, at holborn viaduct. ever since i was there late last year, i have been dreaming about going back and eating some real-life food there, so it took me zero seconds to click through and download my voucher, then book for brunch this weekend – all before i’d even found someone to go with. it’s a good thing my pals all fucking love brunch as much as i do, eh.so despite the awful weather, her awful hangover, and my awful journey from the south (which actually turned out to not be so bad, thanks thameslink!), i met katy in holborn on sunday for a quick spot of brunch. the voucher was valid to be used across the entiiiiiire brunch menu, which meant we weren’t boxed into to eggs and pancakes and coffee (oh my!), and instead our options extended to mains like burgers (yum), steaks (oh god), and – the clincher: sunday roast.i hadn’t had a roast since christmas, so that was a no brainer. well-cooked chicken and some roasties is all i could think about, so i was mightily looking forward to that. katy agreed, and so we ordered two. when we’d arrived we were one table of a handful eating, a few more had been seated since us, but with the amount of staff working (a fricken lot) the floor and in the kitchen it meant our food came out suuuper quickly – and we were eating within 20 minutes of arriving. that’s my kinda deal!and the meals were mahoosive. like, the menu said a half a chicken, but you never really believe that, right? especially not when the meal is only 12.95, but these plates were giant. there was like 60% chicken, 30% yorkshire pud and 10% vegetables. actually more like 5% veg and 5% condiments – bread sauce (according to katy, i didn’t try it) and gravy, natch. oh, and pigs in blankets! there was so much food, and there was no way i was able to eat it all; thankfully i was finding it hard to get a lot of the meat off the bone (where’s your mum when you need her?), so i didn’t feel too bad when the wait staff took a lot of chicken still on the bone away when i was done.we were seated, had ordered, were served and had finished eating in about an hour. which was incredible, really, considering the sheer amount of food we were served. the restaurant was buzzing with customers by the time we left, and part of the reason i was so keen to go there was because i love how busy the restaurant seems on a weekend in comparison to the empty city streets (holborn is like, in the banking district so on a weekend there is nooooone around) outside. the food was delicious and the staff were plentiful (unnecessarily so), and considering once the voucher was applied the two meals plus three drinks and service charge (so many staff working our table, we felt it was important) still didn’t hit 25, well, i’m pretty certain that was a successful sunday brunch! there are a ton of other restaurants i’m hoping to try during the promotion, and have another booked in at heddon street kitchen for galentine’s day in a few weeks too. the vouchers are still available to download from emerald street, so if you’re a londoner who loves brunch, get clicking now! imbeingerica.com
Visited The Fable for an event, so only had the chance to sample the food. I have to mention the chorizo scotch egg which was amazing. I’m not much of a scotch egg fan if I’m honest but the chorizo was a nice flavoursome addition and dunking chips in the gooey yolk was fab. I’ll definite visit again for a proper meal. The interior is lovely, with interesting quotes scattered about. The toilets in particular were lovely, which is rare even in some of the nicer London casual eateries.
I celebrated my 21st birthday at The Fable. I was a tad sceptical because I had never been there before but all my doubts were erased when I arrived! Dinner was divine, as was the service. Probably my fave restaurant/bar this year.
Terrible service. We visited the Fable on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate a birthday and unfortunately this is the most unwelcoming place that we’ve ever been to. We booked the table for 20 people, therefore knowing that serving bigger tables can be tricky did not make any fuss in the beginning about having to wait long for everything we ordered. The place was very quiet at the time so we would have expected to be served more promptly. The slow service was a minor problem next to what was to follow. Firstly, not even one of the staff members glimpsed even the smallest smile during the whole lunch that we were there. Secondly, we were ordering bottles of Prosecco, and as a large group we ended up having around 15 bottles. Most of those bottles were brought to the table warm. It would be common courtesy to at least let us know that they would not be cold not to rudely tell us that ‘That’s all we got!’. We could have ordered something else instead. Thirdly, once we were ready to order, we asked the waitress if the burgers and meals are served with chips or not and she clearly stated that they are not served with fries, therefore we ordered 5 portions to share between us. Surprise, surprise, when the meals were served, absolutely every meal included fries, plus we also got the chips that we had ordered extra, which resulted in us having to waste a lot of food. We were directly lied to about the products, which was quite shocking and made us all feel fooled. Fourth, most of the food that was served was ok, but the people who ordered steak with lobster received the food completely cold. That issue was solved promptly by the waitress, who replaced the meals with a different meal. The arrival of this meal also took around 25 minutes which is quite strange for a place where there was around 3 or 4 tables exempt from us. And finally, the most shockingly, because we were there to celebrate our friend’s 30th birthday, which is a very important event for this person, I asked the manager if they would be able to serve a brownie with a candle for the birthday boy. While I was asking him for it he just walked away from me and then when I called him back, he looked very irritated. I was only looking to find out if it is possible to be organised. After getting a rude response, we were finishing our drinks for about 30 minutes, during which time the cake did not arrive, some people in our party asked for the bill and as I didn’t see a brownie on it I assumed that my order was forgotten, therefore we all paid and as we were finishing up I headed to the bathroom. That is when I saw one of the waitresses coming with the cake, and I told them that the birthday boy is not at the table so can they wait until he is there. As a response to that the waitress just tried to give the cake to me, expecting that I will carry it to the table. As most of the people from the party were already outside and the moment for bringing a cake with a candle and singing a birthday song had clearly passed I asked the manager to cancel the cake, and as a response to that the manager called me annoying and rude and told me that we shouldn’t ask for these kind of things on the last minute (making a normal dessert and putting a candle on it should hardly be something that we would need to tell them a week before?? everywhere else it takes about 5 minutes). Shocked from being insulted by the MANAGER of the place, i went to the bathroom, and on my way back I saw that somebody had put the cake on the table, despite that I asked them not to, and they put it on the table when there were few people left and the birthday boy, so they seriously ruined the moment. It was awkward and sad, because our friend didn’t get the treatment he deserved for his birthday, instead the whole time we felt unwelcome and as if we were annoying the staff and the management. This experience really made us wonder how does the company treat its staff, because it is difficult to find a place with such a negative atmosphere and unhappy people. I believe that none of our party is ever going to return to this place, where a birthday party for our friend was ruined.
6 of us were on the way to another restaurant and we were attracted into the Fable instead by its atmosphere and deco. We were first impressed by the wide range of food shown on the menu. Each ordered one from a different cuisine. Here is the feedback from everyone: people chose pastas were silent; people chose burger said it was good, people chose superfood salads didn’t finish half of it and people chose Thai noodle was disappointed: a half raw chopchoi with withered ends lay on the side of very tough beef, the over sweet source is not Thai at all and overlooked noodles lacked texture. Despite the average food, we really enjoyed the well designed interior and the storytelling details. I really hope that they can push the quality of the food up to the same level.
What a let down. Thought we’d try this place as a change from the place almost opposite we usually go to. Big mistake. Miserly portions, poor value, poor service. Just not compelling, inviting or welcoming. Feel disloyal now to my usual! Our food arrived eventually, it was ok but not much of it and the prices were crazy for what we got. Almost six quid for some bread rolls! And sixteen quid for some tempura prawns and olives. Madness. Won’t be returning.
