Wonderful atmosphere, excellent staff and superb food whether you drop in for coffee with the papers in the lounge, a beer at the bar with the boys or on the terrace on a warm day, relaxed lunch with your family, tea & a scone after shopping or romantic smart dinner, you are welcomed with the same enthusiasm and cannot help but be charmed by the eclectic nature of this amazing all-day bar & bistro
A Very Pleasant Surprise. I recently found myself in the historic market town of Thirsk in the beautiful Yorkshire dales during a family vacation. Though there were a few restaraunts on offer in the town market square, we chose to dine at the Black Lion Bar and Bistro, and am I ever pleased that we did. From the street the Black Lion looks like any other pub, but it became very apparent when we walked it that this was not the case. We were met at the door by a very welcoming host who ushered our party into one of the dining areas and made us most comfortable by one of the big front windows, affording us a view over the bustling market square. The table was set to perfection with an attractive, but not invasive centrepiece. We happend to be in town on a race night, so many of the other diners were in formal attire, though we, in our jeans and tee’s were made just as welcome as any of the other guests. The food menu offered a wonderful selection of starters, mains and desserts for all tastes, and the wine menu was just as full of choice. The starters were all well recieved. The goatscheese tart was cooked to perfection and the fishcakes were light and fluffy, a real triumph for such a busy service! The mains were equally as well turned out. I cannot remember the last time I have had such a wonderfully cooked piece of steak. Hand on my heart, I have lived in the UK since 2002, and this is the first place that I have found that does steaks to this prarie boy’s exact taste. The lamb cutlets were moist and felt like velvet in the mouth and the Beef Strogonoff equal parts creamy and delicious. We finished off our meal sharing the Cheese Platter which was very nice, offering the expected variety of cheeses for all to sample The service was never wanting and the staff were nothing but pleasant and helpful in assisting with recommendations. I do not know if or when I shall find myself in Thirsk again, but I know where I will be dining if I do!
