We went to Xquisite last night and on arrival we were greeted by some (very polite) street drinkers sitting on the stairs outside the restaurant. We took a table and after about 1 minute of looking at the menu asked if we wanted to order. We hadnt even been asked if we wanted any drinks yet and had to ask to see the drink menu. Which I have to say was quite odd, the wine was really bizarrely priced nearly all bottles were 25 and per glass 4 without any indication measurement, I asked what size the glasses were and I was shown a glass.. which didn’t really answer my question. There was no detailed information about the wine, i.e year, region, grape, which would help me to decide on whether I wanted to pay a hefty 25 for a bottle. We decided to get cocktails which were mediocre at best and we weren’t even sure if there was any alcohol in them. The starters – the saltfish fritters were 3.99 for two small disks, which seemed like they were the pre-packed deforsted type, a bit greasy and not that tasty. The 2 dumplings were cheap (just a 1) but I suspect not freshly made either. The worst thing was that both were served with limp iceberg lettuce, a dollop of sweet chilli sauce and a dollop of bright yellow hot dog mustard, which I dipped the fritter in and almost choked on. I seriously did not expect anyone to serve anything other than hotdogs, with hot dog mustard. The main, we ordered jerk chicken platter with 2 sides, which was 19.99, which seemed the most reasonably priced main on the menu (there was a few really expensive things which sounded nice, e.g the lobster, but some really odd things like reggae reggae chicken fajitas; as much as I like reggae sauce, I don’t expect to be served it in a restaurant – I expect everything to be made from scratch by the chef!)I love Jerk Chicken and this was good jerk chicken, however, to my horror the chicken AND salad garnish was also ‘drizzled’ with bright yellow hot dog mustard and the- less- offensive- but-still-not-the-right-accompaniment, sweet chilli sauce! Seriously…! I mean, I’ve been to a lot of restaurants where the chefs get a little over zealous with reduced balsamic sauce as a garnish, but this is the first time I’ve ever see French’s mustard used in the same way.The rice and peas were microwaved, so I burnt my hand on the bowl, the rice was dry and pease had exploded. The Macaroni was okay and the coleslaw was out of a tub.We didn’t bother with a desert. The staff were really polite and nice but they didn’t have enough knowledge of the menu or drinks. The decor – I’m not 100% sure what they’re going for, but I’m just lucky I don’t suffer from epilepsy because the blue flashing lights on the bar could have brought on a fit!! And it’s the first time I’ve been in a restaurant which has lights which dip from red, to green, to yellow, to blue.I did go to this restaurant once when it was Bubbas and it was clear that the chef was talented, but it was probably too high end and expensive for Tulse Hill – now it seems to have a gone a bit too far the other way, its overpriced for the quality.Maybe the restaurant should take a leaf out of Negril on Brixton Hill’s book, which is absolutely brilliant, or maybe give Gordon Ramsey a call!!I won’t be back anytime soon, that’s for sure.
