Looking out over Tottenham Marshes and the Lee Navigation, Springfield Park is one of the loveliest green spaces in London – especially in Spring when the cherry trees start flowering.Rowers from the Lea Rowing Club and narrow boats from the Springfield Marina plough up and down the canal, while runners jog its paths and rugby and tennis players practice on the flat lawn by the water.Formed from the grounds of three large houses in 1905 the 40 acres are now a combination of wildlife reserve, sports fields and manicured gardens. Californian redwoods, rare horse chestnuts and black walnut yews grow here too. And the sole remaining building, the Georgian White Lodge Mansion, in the park now houses a cafe that has become a popular meeting place for locals. It holds regular art exhibitions and mother and toddler groups, and has free wi-fi and holds occasional special events. Outside there is seating on the lawn, fenced off to keep toddlers from straying and dogs from getting in.It’s a great place to come for coffee (they favour a South American blend) and cake and they also do sandwiches and have a seasonal menu that’s emphasis is on healthy eating. A hidden treasure.
