When Michel Roux Jr recommends a restaurant to be one of his favorites for a take-away then it has a lot to live up to, but for the most part Holy Cow doesn’t disappoint. It wont be a cheap meal but it will be a good one! The selection of dishes is far more unusual than your average curry house but there are a few old familiars sprinkled throughout. The sauces are rich and full of flavour, the vegetables are good quality and havent had the life cooked out of them and the breads are delicious my favorite’s the peshwari naan. They do lots of really decent and interesting veggie options which makes a nice change. Good enough to pass on the meat entirely with no regrets! Try the paneer nawabi and vegetable jaiselmer if you dont believe me. The down side despite the higher prices their chicken doesn’t appear to be higher-welfare and HOLY COW Holy Cow!! Take all those god-damn king prawns off the menu and save a few mangroves! With a bit of sustainable seafood and some happier chickens on the menu Id give this place top marks.
Takes me back home (to India, that is). Everything is good but the biriyani is to die for. I’d happily pay double for everything on the menu, and the delivery is always quick.
Best take away archway. I ordered a delivery last night i really found a convenient service ever done for take away, fast order/politeness, delivered in time though told to be an hour for delivery with proper food temperature!. am really very satisfied with the service done by this branch! mouth watering food.
AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE AND POOR FOOD. Ordered a 50 takeaway at 7.20pm, food arrived at 8.40….most of it cold – annoying but bearable. However they had forgotten one of the main dishes – when ordering for 2 this is particularly frustrating – and so I called back to tell them this and ask for it to be delivered. I would now expect an apology, however what I got was a barrage of excuses and an offer of ‘a free dish next time’ (2 problems with this: 1) this ‘solution’ leaves me in a position no better off; and 2) they think there will be a next time?!). They finally relented and, after my persuasion, they reluctantly promised to prioritise my order over others. 25 minutes later and my food arrives, finally. Yep – COLD. In a fit of hunger induced anger I pick up the phone again and asked for my money back, not only for the infamous main dish, but also for the rice I couldn’t eat, sag paneer which was ruined and the fact that my girlfriend had already finished and was settling in to an episode TOWIE….I was offered a refund of 8.64 – the price of the main dish – brilliant. I tried to inform them that was very poor customer service and, if they didn’t offer me a more reasonable refund, I would write a very poor review on the internet. If you’ve managed to read the whole of this lengthy complaint, then you can probably work out which customer service route they went down. If you live in islington don’t bother with holy cow, go yo parveen instead!
Like choosing a broadband provider, or a new phone, the decision over which Indian takeaway you’ll order from tonight always involves compromise. Either the meat will be represented by three measly bite-lets of dry chicken or the sauce will reap an unpleasant revenge the next morning. The poppadoms will be soft, or the naan bread of a foamy consistency. Holy Cow has never represented a compromise of these sorts. Large portions (exceptionally so, in the case of the starters) which do not skimp on the meat. Huge chunks of meat, or butterflied prawns of dizzying proportions in perfectly conceived sauces. These sauces vary in spice levels, from ‘Spice, what spice?’ to ‘Jesus, my tongue!’, but are all delicious and inexplicably lacking in curry hangover effects. The starters, too, are ridiculous. Never order the calamari if you don’t plan to share. swilliamthomas.tumblr.com
Ordered at 18:50 on a Friday evening, arrived at 19:10.Paneer nawabi – sickly sweet – hold the sugarChana masala – averagePathani Baigan – not badMushroom rice – okAll in all pretty average. Probably wouldn’t bother again.Would’ve liked to try a paratha but at 3.55 a pop – far to steep!
Good food but v. poor service. Good food. Items missing from order. Delivery was over an hour late (it took two hours to arrive). The restaurant told me it had been dispatched after an hour but the driver told me he left 10 minutes before delivery (ie. 1 hour, 50 minutes after ordering). When I rung to ask about the missing food + delays the restaurant seemed extremely nonplussed about lying to customers.
