This used to be a firm favourite of ours but on our visit today – the taste just wasn’t there. Between 2 of us, we ordered:Bhel puri – was crunchy & nice.Chilli paneer – too oily and needed seasoning. Not the comfort food of yesteryears.Chilli fries – just seemed to be doused with ketchup rather than a chilli sauce. Tea – freshly made and not full of sugar which was great. You also have an option of masala tea. Service was good and our bill came to 18 which seemed a tad overpriced for basically some veggie starters. There’s limited paid parking in the locality.
Went here a earlier this month on a saturday just as it opened (around 11:40). We managed to get a window table – perfect for people watching! I ordered an aloo paratha and my dining partner an aloo papri chaat & mango lassi. The chaat came quickly as it’s a cold snack. The flavours were amazing! Sweet, salty, spicy crunchy and saucy. It was perfectly balanced. The mango lassibwas a let down otherwise I would score it higher. You can tell they used tinned mango pulp instead of fresh mangoes – hello, it’a mango season AND you’re in Green Street. No excuses. The aloo paratha came about 15 minutes later all hot and fresh served with a small portion of yogurt. The paratha was thin and the filling inside quite generous and TASTY. One of the best going. Nice vegetarian indian food makes a yummy and welcome difference.
It was last year we went london on holiday. My son wanted to have poori so we went to this restaurant. No one was there to attend us on entering and we called n asked should we wait..? Is restaurant open..? With a pale face a rude answer came it will take time.. (it felt if u want to eat u wait or else leave) after 30 mins food was served chilled. Boss.. hello… listen.. we had to scream to call waiter n say food is cold.. on which he replied its like this only. Havent seen this kind of staff and management. We didnt completed the food, paid the bill n left. No one bothered to ask seeing food that is anything wrong that u left the entire food. I blame the owners too for this. He was present and just busy hiding his face in news paper as if he is unaware. Will never go n never recommend. Not worth for 1 rating also but 1 will atleast highlight.
Vijay’s Chawalla is an established vegetarian eatery serving generally good vegetarian Indian snacks and street food. Admittedly, although I am not a big fan of vegetarian food, I simply love and cannot resist their Vegetable Samosas and Masala Chai. Yummy. Vijay’s Masala Dosa is also good. I have overwhelmingly found most of the Indian vegetarian eateries that I have tried here in the UK to be either poor or average at best, especially when compared to their counterparts in India, however, Vijay’s is a welcomed exception. Vijay’s is also both clean and has more consistent standards – both, unfortunately, are a rarity in this area.
I am very surprisedto see so many positive reviews, therefore, I doubt the authenticityWe had to wait 45 min for our food when complaint the staff was neither apologeticand nor polite. The deluxe thali had lots of dishes, unfortunately, they all tasted the same. My husbandhad cholleBhatore and son ordered Dosa and Samber. South Indian Sambher and North InidanCholleBhatoora had thesame sauce (tinned ) taste. Overallit was a horrible experience…..we wasted our time and money as none us were able to even finish half of our food.
The Deluxe Thali consisting of vegetable curry, potato curry, chickpea curry, daal, sweet, yoghurt, salad, samosa, rice, poppadom and 3 large poori for 9.75. Decent price and filling. My favourite was the chickpea curry which had bold flavours coming through and the daal which was unusually tangy and complimented the poori. The other components were mediocre. The masala chips were packed full of flavour with a hint of chilli hitting the tastebuds towards the end.
Chawalla. Excellent veggie indian food, really hard to beat, good value too…..hard to get a seat in there these days though…!!!!
