I have been here before several years ago and I was very impressed. Not so last night. We booked for 7 and they hadn’t made a note of our reservation, and the server was very rude. The food was mediocre and I will come again when a different chef is on duty as last nights fare was distinctly uninspired.
Interesting hippy place featuring different chef every night in this small vegetarian cafe filled to the brim with people even on week nights.I was in a group of 7 and we arrived for an 8.30pm booking, the other booking available was 6.30pm which is a bit early to get to for some of us. 8.30pm was a bit late so some of us arrived hungry and unfortunately it was a bit of a wait. We placed our order after 20 minutes of sitting down, and then another 50 minutes wait to get our food. There were two choices for each course (starter 3, main 8, dessert 3), whilst we were waiting to order, we saw one option from starter and main got sold out and they put on a new item on each course. We were planning to share the sold out hummus starter (the other choices were soup and salad) so we ended up only getting a main each plus most of us getting a dessert.I went for the chickpea tagine with couscous which was quite moreish and warming. The other main choice was feta and sweet potato tart that some people liked while one girl thought she got a soggy one. The mains also came with a mixture of salad, one being a spicy (wasabi? horse radish?) beetroot, which was very interesting on the palate but didn’t quite go with my main. The dessert was a choice between a mandarin, vanilla mascarpone & raspberry pudding (a cake) which I got, it was a bit dense and slightly on the dry side however not too bad – it would have been great to have some ice cream or custard served on the side, the latter which the other dessert had. The other dessert was an apple crumble which was very average, served on a plate, it was dry and just seem like the very end and leftover bits of apple slices and few crumbs.I enjoyed the meal overall mainly because of the interesting vibe of the place, friendly staff and our BYO wine. Food could have been so much better but then again I might come back to sample a different chef’s dishes.
Situated on a residential road about 5 mins away from Vauxhall station, this is a real hidden gem. Packed full even on weekdays, it’s clear that they have a winning combination of delicious and cheap food, cosy atmosphere (there was live music when I went) and the BYOB also helps. They have a daily changing roster of chefs which keeps the food interesting as there is usually just 2-3 choices each for starter and main. I had a beetroot soup and a cottage pie with salads. Both were amazing, the seasoning was spot on and really brought out the flavours of the vegetables. I didn’t miss not having meat at all. I’ll be sure to come back again soon.
I visit this cafe regularly for lunch. It is a small and cozy cafe with decent and homely interiors. The cafe has new chief everyday serving delicious and fresh vegan meals. It is difficult to recommend dish in particular as menu changes everyday and i have loved every single dish.It is the most economical place and serves the tastiest food with warmth and love.I recommend this cafe and you will definitely end up being a regular visitor here.
Great place – interesting concept, excellent prices, cool decor and you bring your own wine. Quality of food varies a lot though depending on the cook but definitely worth a visit.
Cooperation is a Good Thing. On the site of a former squat, the Bonnington Cafe is one of the most unique arrangements for a restaurant I can imagine. There is no chef, rather a rota of ‘member cooks’ who run the restaurant as their own on the various nights they are responsible for. This means you book directly with the chef (on their mobile, the restaurant has no phone number). As a result the cuisine can vary wildly in style from night to night, everything from Japanese to Italian has featured at one time, but quality is remarkably consistent. All the food is vegetarian and there is little or no choice; my last visit saw one starter, one main & two desserts. Service is relaxed & friendly, the furniture, like the cutlery is mismatched. In many ways it is more like eating in someone’s front room than a restaurant, but I enjoy it all the more for that. Now the kicker; the price. Starters & desserts 3, mains 7. For the quality of produce on display, never mind the general cooking skill, these are extraordinary prices. All in all, Bonnington Cafe really is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get, but you’ll probably like it.
