I honestly don’t know how I’ve never tried any of the baked goods at Bermondsey’s Del’Aziz because they all look utterly irresistible. Innovative looking cakes and exquisite pastries adorn the windows and tempt you inside this Eastern-Mediterranean bakery and restaurant.A mix of young families, tourists and girlfriends nursing their hangovers, this place offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a plush, Moroccan-style shisha lounge available for hire. The decor looks authentic and the lights low: a welcome sight if you’re still wearing last night’s make up.All the portions are generous and the plates are delivered in a timely fashion by a team of efficient waiters. So far I’ve only had breakfast here (both meat and veggie), but I would like to try some of the mezze platters and tagines as I assume they’ll be a little more unique and flavourful.Definitely worth a visit. syruptitiously.com
I feel like a bit of a fraud writing a review for Del’Aziz because whenever I go I always completely stray away from the menu’s signature Mediterranean dishes, in favour of a 2for1 burger/ cocktail deal, or in this case – cake! To be completely honest thought I think that this reflects the restaurant’s massive identity confusion. Mediterranean? Lebanese? Bakery? Bar? Shisha lounge? What are you Del’Aziz?Aside from that, the food and service is OKAY. On one occasion the waitress brought out the wrong dish (probably due to the overly complicated menu again), and she started crying when we told her of her mistake – sort of awkward. But, hey, the manager then gave us a massive slab of free cake so can’t moan too much. For these reasons, and because the cocktails are very much watered down, don’t spend too much money here. In fact only go if you’re planning to have one of the 2for1 options!
Living in the neighbourhood, I have always wanted to try this restaurant. Thus, when some friends came to visit me from US, I thought it was the right occasion to do it and so I took them there.Inside, the place was actually amazing: a fancy bar, detailed and lightening. Unfortunately, I cannot actually say the same about the services and the food.Service was not efficient at all. They actually brought our cutlery after our meals were served! Also, even the food was not that nice. I had the Persian ‘Koobideh’ Lamb which was decent, but not as good as many other Mediterranean restaurants.Things look actually better than they taste, as someone mentioned before. In addition, compared to the quality, I think we pay a bit too much.
