I really enjoy this place. It is a little expensive but you can drink an amazing morning coffee, everyday. At the afternoon, you can drink different draft beers in its cozy bar. Higlhy recommended!
Good pub food, and a staple burger make the Metropolitan a safe weekend option for a bite to eat. They do try to push beyond regular pub staples and do offer up some well thought out dishes.
Service was ok, food was not the best.. I have been absent from this venue for about 8 years and the last occassion was extremely good (food and experience). Anyway, I brought my partner and our child (6 years old) here last night and from the outside, it looked very atmospheric. We were sat down at our table promptly and ordered some drinks without any issue. The menu wasn’t very wide ranging, but was ok.We ordered the sausage and mash kid’s meal (peas and gravy included) for our daughter. Our starters consisted of: a potato and leek soup, which was rather overcooked (the essential fresh flavours of the leek and potato was lost in the blended broth); and fish cakes for the missus- which she described was ‘ok’, but rather overpowered by the cooked smoked salmon inside. We were asked whether we wished for our kid’s meal to arrive at the same time as our starter (the kid’s menu does not include a starter)- this arrived whilst we were nearly finished with our starters. We had no issues at this point, as we were having fun trying to ask our child to try each of our starters (she preferred the fried fish cakes, obviously!)The kid’s sausages and mash arrived and it looked fantastic. We usually struggle to get our daughter to finish her meal and whilst this plate looked like it could feed a teenager, she had no trouble devouring the whole lot. It did look rather good!Ten minutes after the kid’s meal arrived, our mains of ‘steak of the day’ arrived. From the first moment of looking at it, I had reservations… the chips looked like it is very crispy- the sense that it had been refried a couple of times came to mind. There was a mushroom, watercress garnish and roasted tomato halves (which was quite sweet, from the white wine vinegar / oregano). The steak (requested medium rare) was well seasoned, but black on the outside. It was a generous piece of meat but rather over-grilled! Between myself and my partner, one of us had jaw-ache after completing the meal! We know that we had the right for it to be redone, but we’re not the complacent type in restaurants and this was half past eight at night (our last meal was breakfast). I believe between us, we had one mouthful from each of our steaks which we could describe as medium / medium rare… the rest was just badly overcooked. Our two sauces: stilton / peppercorn were rather salty, but they did, at least carry the flavours they were supposed to be.Our daughter finished the meal with a two-scoop ice cream, which she enjoyed with the strawberry garnish.Wine: Pinot Noir (gran reserva 2010 from Chile?)… for a Gran Reserva, it was rather estringent and hard, but we finished the whole bottle, nontheless.Bill came to 72, which, if we had made better choice of foods would not be too bad at all- we left a tip. Even though we did not enjoy the food too well, the kid’s meal did keep our child’s bum on chair instead of the usual ‘please eat your food’ pleas… worth the tip!Atmosphere was overall good.kid’s experience: 7/10Adult’s experience: 5 1/2 out of ten.
Service is a bit patchy but every meal has been at least good and sometimes excellent
Not. Gastro pub. When i pay premium prices, I don’t expect everything. It should be better than supermarket and not leave me hungry.5 for soup that seemed like tinned soup with some frozen veg and spices chucked in. The mains aren’t much better. 13 for fish and chips, worth paying if it’s good (ie better than a chippy) but this was cod and it was far from fresh. The met remains popular because of it’s location and captive market. But the food is barely better than Weatherspoons. In fact, I’ve sometimes had better at Weather spoons.
Give it a try. It’s a really great place. I’m surprised to see that it’s only on 54% at the moment! We live locally and end up there far too often. It’s the easiest place to meet people not so familiar with the area being a dominating presence in West Didsbury, but also great for the numerous open fires, decent selection of real ales, great ambience, staff, wasabi peanuts… etc.I love the way it’s been kitted out, lots of nice old furniture, book cases to separate sections but also lots of space between tables in most places. The food comes in 3 varieties I think. There’s the bar menu for the day, the evening menu in the bar – i’ve never managed to catch this, it’s something like 6-7:30pm -and finally the restaurant menu. The food at the restaurant is great – not too expensive, good range and high quality. The specials change relatively frequently too.I do tend to avoid it a bit on Friday and Saturday evenings when it always seems to be totally rammed in the bar, overflowing onto the street to be mopped up by an enormous queue of taxis..Other downside would be price of drinks, it is probably steeper than some, but not all, of the surrounding bars. Perhaps this would put me off if I was going with a bunch of people for cocktails, but for a few pints etc. it’s no big deal.I have had a lot of opportunities to ask things of the staff and they have been very helpful. Perhaps the only other thing worth a mention is the wifi -recently I have had trouble connecting to it when I’ve been down there, but it’s free and helped us a lot when we were just moving in!
Pub food but definitely above average. The menu could have a more extensive choice but everything on it is excellent. The large outdoor seating area is a bonus in summer both for eating and drinking.
