Fantastic old style English Pub..great food and beer. Lovely garden out the back to sit in the sun. Good pub for sporting events with TV’s everywhere.
As pubs go this is one of the best in the village. Great food, good outside space and a great welcome. If your looking for an old fashioned style pub with locals and an atmosphere then pop down and have a pint or two!
One of a number of Young’s pubs in the Wimbledon Village/Common area, the Rose and Crown – an old Georgian coaching house – is probably the nicest building of the lot and fits perfectly into Wimbledon’s slightly rural aesthetic. Inside, the pub is a tale of two halves: the front section feels very much like a traditional – albeit upmarket – country pub, with various little alcoves, perfect for a few quiet drinks, and the bar, which is square in shape, in the middle. Of particular note are the Hogarth prints on the wall above the fireplace, which are a great touch and certainly contribute to the atmosphere; the back of the building, a new extension, is more of a restaurant and is popular with larger groups, especially families with children. Beyond this, there is also a decent-sized beer garden, ideal for a sunny day. The food menu is rather good, particularly the sandwiches which are very generously proportioned, the freshly-made onion rings (delicious!), and the black pudding scotch eggs, all available as bar snacks. The selection of real ales is perhaps more limited than the nearby Hand in Hand or Crooked Billet, but, being a Young’s pub, what there is is good nonetheless. This dog-friendly pub is certainly worth a visit and is a firm fixture of the Wimbledon ‘pub circuit’.
