Perfect local. So excited that this is 10 minutes from our door as it ticks the box for the perfect local.Dawn is front of house, and hubbie Piero and son Alan share the cooking. They met in Rome when she was an air stewardess and bizarrely she managed to persuade him to move to Irby ;)Really lovely, friendly, chatty lady. We did benefit by being the only customers on a Tuesday (are people here scared of the rain?!) but got the star treatment.Himself had a competent crab salad and I had the vongole to start. As per the above, nice al dente pasta, generous with the clams (French) and a chilli kick. Perfect rendition.I then had the Sicilian carne, which was thin rump steaks marinated in lemon, garlic and herbs, very pleasant, and himself had Piero’s Nonna’s slightly odd recipe of breaded and fried steak. OK, bit weird. We shared some caponata and ‘country peas’ done in stock with pancetta.Only disappointments were the cheese course, which was heavy on the pecorino/parmesan and came with plastic wrapped crackers, all a bit plane food, and the wine list is oddly steep. We’ll be back, again and again. I imagine we’ll probably go heavy on the pasta henceforward though – there was a nice looking one with sausage and chard, and the lemon one mentioned above would be great, I’m sure. Please visit. Especially on a rainy Tuesday evening! We need them to stay in business, for entirely selfish reasons! Oh, and they’re getting the first mussels of the season in a fortnight…
Regarding the restaurant Da Piero in Irby, Wirral, I went to go there yesterday (Monday) but it was closed. So i made the booking for tonight but after reading the veggie and vegan menus i had a few questions. They have parmesan on the veggie menu so i asked if it was a vegetarian parmesan to which they told me it was no it was not vegetarian. So, i made the suggestion that why dont they label it so that it says its not veggie but that didnt go down too well as she said she has customers who are vegetarians who eat it. She also said she has vegetarian customers who eat fish. I then questioned if the wine in the vegan dishes was actually vegan and she said they cannot guarantee it as their wine suppliers in Italy will not put it in writing. What a joke! They have a veggie and vegan menu with items in it that may not be veggie or vegan!!!She was quite rude to me at first asking me Do you want your booking or not and also saying to me Well, you wont be drinking the wine tonight either as we cannot guarantee it is vegan. I was extremely disappointed in their attitude towards me before i have even stepped in the place and also to their relaxed attitude towards the veggie and vegan menu and lack of detail and information on the menu. I praised her for offering a vegan and veggie menu but what is the point of going if it may not really be veggie or vegan!!!!After all that, I cancelled my booking!!!!!
Chris Wirral. I have recently eaten at Da Piero in Irby and would consider this to be the best Italian Food in the Wirral and Merseyside Area. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife team and Piero who is Sicilian and the Chef sources as much of the food as possible from Italy. There have been complaints about it being expensive and not being able to book at times people want but these are in my opinion unfounded. This is a tiny restaurant with only 20 odd covers and because of its size and its popularity they can only fit people in when tables are available. If you book in advance they are always accomodating. On price this may not be at levels English People are use to paying in cheap and cheerful pizza and pasta restaurants but what you are paying for hear and receive is great quality Italian food which is cooked simply but packed with flavour and freshness. The staff are lovely and the only criticism I could make is there appears to be a shortage of white wines to choose from and Piero needs to put more of his native Sicilian Wines on his list. I recently attended an Italian Class Dinner there with 11 others and they placed us all on one long table, served all the starters and the mains at the same time to us and considering there is only Piero in the kitchen this was a tremendous feat as he had other diners as well. They also spoke to us in Italian all evening to help us with our language course and couldn’t have been more helpful. This is as authentic Italian Food as you can eat outside Italy with a great choice of regional dishes from all parts of Italy.
FANTASTIC. Da Piero is the best restaurant on the Wirral, with it’s superb food, it’s fantastic staff and it’s unique atmosphere it cannot be matched. It is the gem within Irby village, all of the awards it has won are more than deserved. Booking is essential however the staff have always been more than accomodating and flexible. Da Piero is my little taste of Italy, with carefully sourced produce, wine and authentic italian dishes it is simply ‘fantastico’.
Never eaten there.. I have attempted to book a table here on five occasions but have never been successful. The reason is they will never take a booking for 7.30 pm. They are not prepared to put themselves out for ther diners. Bookings have to be made at a time to suit them.I will not be dictated to by a restaurant and as such I will not be dining there.
Very dissapointing. I recently visited with my husband after hearing it was going to be in the Good Food Guide for next year. God only knows why! Very expensive and very small. The food was nice, but far too expensive for what it was.We felt like we were having our dinner on the table next to us.Rather dissapointing.
The most fabulous and authentic Italian around.fantastic food and amazing staff.recommend every time.
