Wedgwood had been on the hitlist for quite some time, so I had built up my own hype about it before I even walked in the door. Opted for the ‘deciding time’ to begin…because who doesn’t want a glass of fizz and some amuse bouche to start things off?! The soup was pretty disappointing and was more like chicken stock, but the meal picked up from there. The scallops are delish, would highly recommend them, and my trout dish was also very tasty. Would have been much better if it hadn’t been for a slightly abrupt waitress and a pretty rubbish chicken soup thing. Ended up feeling a bit shortchanged overall after waiting so long to go.
It’s not that Wedgwood is good or that it’s bad. It’s just….average. And for the prices you’re paying, you won’t want ‘just average’. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s nice. Great ambience, great service. But food? It’s just average. So that’s why it gets a score just below the mid point.
Wedgwood has always been a restaurant that I hold in high regard. It was recommended to me by a good foodie friend and I spent a wonderful, if very decadent and expensive, first evening therea few years ago with a much-missed friend who now lives in Toronto. It was also my first choice for my recent birthday meal and I was sad to find it was closed for the dates I required. Thus, feeling in need of fine-dining, and happy to see that the restaurant had re-opened, I decided to take Tom there on a surprise dinner date (I’m not one for stereotypical gender roles!).Appetites whetted by a few cocktails in Monteiths (we love the bar area for drinks!), we made our way down the Royal Mile to the pretty lamp-lit entrance. We were quickly escorted to a white-linen clad table downstairs and were happy to be away from the bustle of the busy upstairs room. I had pre-ordered drinks and they arrived promptly: a refreshing and fruity glass of blanc de blancs and a Botanist and tonic. Happy and comfortable, we perused the menu. The menu at Wedgwood is always exciting and it can be difficult, and time-consuming, trying to choose from the myriad of delicious options. As such, instead of the usual amuse bouche to tide you over while you wait for starters, Wedgwood offer a ‘deciding time’ option of fizz and a selection of appetisers to keep you going while you choose. I had really enjoyed this during my last visit, but two glasses of fizz, on top of all of the cocktails at Monteiths, seemed a little much- so we decided to skip it this time.It was a difficult decision, but we both decided to opt for the ‘Wee tour of Scotland’ menu- a tasting selection that included most of the dishes we would have chosen from the a la carte and an old favourite that I was excited to see- the goat’s cheese semi-fredo!We also ordered a bottle of Chateau Ka- a Lebanese wine filled with the flavours of strawberries and black pepper that I can never resist when it appears in a wine list!First to arrive on the table was a little plate of homemade bread served with a garlic and thyme dip.The bread was absolutely delicious- soft and cakey with a sweetness akin to brioche. The dip made for a perfect accompaniment with the tangy sour and sweet flavours reminding me of an aromatic stew I ate once as a child in the Canary Islands and never quite forgot. It didn’t last long…To read more, please go to http://www.epicureanedinburgh.blogspot.com
Truly disappointed with the service. Took couple of overseas friends for what I thought would be a Scottish cuisine experience but turned out it wasn’t what we expected. One of my friends ordered Sea Trout dish that he thought would be local presentation but it turned out to be a Japanese dish. The description of the dish did not say at all that it would be Japanese. We have no problems with Japanese food but they should at least make it clear on the menu or explain the dish properly to the customers so they know what to expect. The waiting staff were rude and unhelpful. I would not be going back or recommend this place!
This place is fab what more can I say. I know the restaurant has won the accolade of Scottish restaurant of the year … and now I understand why!! The food is superb – freshly and expertly cooked – wonderful flavours melding together beautifully. The service is unobtrusively excellent. I would have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this restaurant for a truly special evening out. Make sure to try the deliberation – a glass of fizz and canaps whilst you peruse the menu!!!
Truly memorable food at very good value. Highlights include lobster creme brle (truly – not to be missed), sea bass, venison, and sticky toffee pudding.
Oh what a disappointment on 2nd visit!Having eaten dinner around a year ago here & really enjoyed it I was looking forward to a Sunday lunch. The set menu sounded appealing though some hefty supplements (+10 for steak on a 16 set menu!) was excessive! But oh dear. Rabbit & pork rillettes was so dry with no moistness and worse absolutely no seasoning. The fish cake was all potato and again unseasoned. The steak whilst nice was a tiny end cut of fillet and barely 2 mouthfuls (10 extra remember). The lamb stovies tho were fine, but again very small portions. Wine was good. Deserts ok. Overall tho a let down. Sorry.
