Surprisingly delicious! I tried Soba on a whim because it was the first Asian food I saw by the bus stop, and it turned out to be a great choice! The atmosphere was chill, with a definite hipster vibe. I LOVE vegetable gyoza, and theirs is definitely on par with some great Japanese restaurants, even if the portion was small (probably not enough to share, at least). For my meal, I got the Shang Mai noodle bowl, a coconut-based broth with chicken & prawns. It was delicious and far more than I could eat! The service was only ok – my waitress kept forgetting I was there somehow, even though there were only 3 other tables in the restaurant (I went at a definite off-hour); however, the manager was attentive & welcoming, and my food was served quickly and hot! PS. GREAT beer selection.
Visited here on a very sunny day so we sat outside, the seating was comfortable and there was a nice atmosphere.Had the soba sharing platter between two of us, it was very good, the prawn lollipops were especially good. We then had Nasi Goreng and Japanese Katsu curry which we were both very satisfied with. Got a good price on the main meals as they had a student deal on main dishes. To drink we tried a couple of the cocktails; my boyfriend had an umbongo and I asked for the pineapple and basilito. They didn’t have any basil in at the time so the bartender made me up a pinapplito instead…it was still very nice.Service was fine, it seemed a queue kept building up at the bar but this is to be expected with one bartender on and a very long cocktail list.
I can’t say that I didn’t like Bar Soba, but not is it the best restaurant I’ve been to. Staff mostly friendly and chatty. Chairs uncomfortable but arty. I had the lemongrass and coconut chicken – the meat was lovely but rice served with it too spicy for my palate. Odd dessert of a pancake filled with coconut and banana – not unpleasant but quite strange. I’m ambiguous – not blown away but it was nice enough.
