Wonderful food & wine! Will definitely be recommending!! Fun venue with nautical theme only a handful of tables so make sure you book in advance. Started with crab salad then lemon sole with shrimps others of our party had lobster & chips and sea bass with chorizo all of it fabulous. Finished by sharing a brownie and a coffee & ice cream concoction!

Stepping in from its unassuming frontage on Newhaven Harbour, your first glimpse is of a brand new establishment that has tried to mix white-leather and pine booths with a contrived sense of tumble-down. Its a pokey little place but it grants cosiness away from the great grey harbour outside.Visiting for a friends birthday on a blowy Wednesday evening, I couldnt fail to be impressed by C-Shacks seafood offering. The waiter gave a substantial run-through of the equally substantial specials board, abounding with freshness and variety. Most of our party couldn’t stay away from the scallops which did sound excellent, but I took the seared tuna on a jalapeno and cucumber bed. They were comments from the others about the poverty of the portion but I was roundly satisfied by the quality of the dish. In particular, the finely diced jalapeno and cucumber counterbalanced really nicely and the flavours of the tuna sang out on top. Small, unfilling and delicate, all valid but irrelevant characteristics when considering that it was great piece of work all the same. Another friend had tempura prawns and squid which looked the part. The rest of the table was roundly seduced by the bargainous half-lobster with chips, a very reasonable 16.95 and appropriately cooked, with the meat coming cleanly away from the shell. They were certainly fresh and also cooked by a very dab hand; seeing them eaten yards from the harbour was a very hearty sight indeed.I opted for a whole skate, from the daily-updated market blackboard, and have come to realise since that it’s a significantly overfished animal. Catching, serving or eating it are all strongly advised against on conservation grounds (see advice from the Marine Conservation Society), and I ought to have checked before ordering. With that in mind, any observations on the quality of the serving are irrelevant. This abdication of conservational responsibility is reflected in my diminished rating for the restaurant, so i ought to say that for the quality of my starter and of the lobster my friends enjoyed, the picturesque setting, the warm and effective service and the cosiness of the room, C Shack is in all other respects a very welcome addition to the Edinburgh food scene.
