I have been in this place few times. Not for food but for drinks. Interior is lovely, drink selection is good however any time I’ve been in recently they were out of draft beer. I don’t drink beer but my other half does. I had cocktail which is good and the staff is nice. However something is missing and that is not just the draught beer….I don’t think I’ll go again. katalinsom.com

A friend of mine from home came up to Edinburgh in August to show his fringe play ‘at this cool bar called Clouds & Soil’, like oh I must of heard of it. It so happened that I hadn’t but I was quickly on the scent and how happy I was that there happened to be an itison voucher available at just that time! The deal was for two starters and two mains for a brilliant price and I definitely felt that there was some serendipity at work. We didn’t get a chance to try it out until well after the fringe had tidied itself away and the dust was beginning to settle, but late one evening we mosied on down. When we arrived our table wasn’t yet ready but we were happy to wait in the ground floor bar area. Though it is a cocktail joint, we just went for a beer and a wine in part to give the poor guy behind the bar a break. He was the only member of staff around and seemed a little bogged down. When we finally made our way upstairs a short while later to the restaurant, it was a similar situation. There were two waitresses for the whole restaurant, seeming very flustered. At first they seemed not to notice us loitering in the door, but after a while they sat as down. The bar was fairly stacked with used glasses, which doesn’t offend me at all but is just testament to the fact that on this particular night the whole place seemed drastically under staffed. That being said, the two waitresses were lovely and attentive throughout the course of the meal, as much as they could be whilst managing the floor.I opted for the baked fig, blue cheese and parma ham starter and s.o. went for the salmon roulade. Normally we always choose different dishes so we can sample more, but on this occasion we were both so enamored of the duck dish we both had to go for that. The starters arrived after a wee while. They had brought the wrong dish for s.o. We politely pointed out the problem, saying that it didn’t matter but she did take it away and bring back the right dish pronto. We tucked in and really loved the dishes. The roulade filling was delightful and filled with flavor, and the bits and pieces on my plate worked in perfect harmony. Pretty decent stuff. It was a long wait for the mains, but eventually they arrived looking as promising as the first plates. The duck was served with roasted veggies and chips, all of which were perfectly cooked. An interesting surprise was the addition of jewel like blackberries, which certainly added a little something to the dish in my opinion, although s.o. found them a little perfunctory. So overall the food was good. The servers were really lovely and absolutely trying their best, but we both agreed the food was let down by the service, but the service was let down by the management. We would try it again to compare the experience, and next time opt for a cocktail! gastronomicum.blogspot.com

We’ve been meaning to try Clouds & Soil for a while and then when an offer came up we couldn’t resist. Owned by the same people who run Bond No.9 we were expecting great things. When you arrive it’s beautiful. The interior is fantastic with a downstairs bar where you can sit and have a drink if your early or just fancy stopping in for a cocktail. The restaurant is upstairs and stairs are pretty winding. But the climb is totally worth it. The dining room is laid out very well and makes good use of the space without everyone being crammed in. They also have a private dining room which can be pre booked for between 4-6 people. Definitely a must for a birthday celebrations etc.The staff we very friendly and knowledgeable on the drink they served. We both ordered the salmon roulade to start and then duck breast mains. The food was great. Very tasty and fresh. The duck was cooked to perfection, medium, and wasn’t chewy. We both thought we’d try a dessert, opting for the cheese board and the carrot cake. Both very well presented and extremely delicious. They do a fantastic carrot cake!Overall it was a great night out and we will definitely be back. edinburgers.co.uk
