This West End hide out provides a much-needed shelter from the garish burger joints and constant bustle that surrounds it. Nestled just off Princes Street, inside Mathers has an unusual grandeur, harking back to the smoky city-centre taverns of old. There’s a multitude of screens on which to enjoy live sport, an excellent selection of ales and malts to sample, and the laid back nature that only comes with a bar that welcomes all, regulars and newcomers alike. The staff are very friendly and the barman who served me recommended the fine Bitter & Twisted, a blonde beer that leaves a refreshing zing on the tongue and complements the late Spring air perfectly.
The pub has recently undergone a modernisation process, which also didn’t detract away from the original and traditional features of the bar. There is a large choice of malt whisky, as well as cask ales and craft lager. They also expanded the wine list, which is fantastic news, as previously they only had one type of each wine, now there are four reds, a rose and four whites. The bottled beer range is very good and extensive as well, ranging from Miller to Brooklyn Lager. The spirit range is also great, but the real reason to visit is for the steak pies that are amazing. It’s like a clown car with all the meat they have managed to pack in.Also the bar staff are nice and easy to talk to.
