Cheapness is the key here. Cheapness and chickens. They’re everywhere on Shandwick’s broad, sweeping menu. I even think they’re in the walls, insulating us against the cold. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a rather cannibalistic reality, there were chickens running about mad doing the cooking in the kitchens at Shandwicks.If it is they’re doing a damn fine job, because service is certainly not slow. Neither are the portions palty, indeed they’re poultry (I often wonder why when one heads to the bar to order the barman doesn’t simply ask ‘and how would sir like sir’s chicken today?’) but they’re solidly put together and you certainly can’t fault them when the five-and-a-bit pounds pricetag includes a pint. Yes, a full pint of beer! You get value like this, and I suppose chicken, round the corner at McDonalds but where else can you get fed to such a degree and enjoy a pint in very comfortable surroundings for that sort of price?! Honestly, it’s cheaper than living at home!!The dance nights at the weekends are a right larf (cheap drinks and everyones out to just have fun which creates a great atmosphere!) and it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a game of pool after work – something I’ve noticed is becoming a rarity across Edinburgh as a whole.Don’t expect more from Shandwicks than it is and you won’t be disappointed.
