First time ever visiting this bar. Popped in for a pint and left with the intention of returning in the near future for food and drink. Staff were excellent. All very friendly, welcoming and providing top class customer service. made this a very pleasant experience. Thank you!!!
On the hunt for the best Burger in the Burgh, our next choice was the Cambridge. After high praise and recommendations we booked a table 3 weeks in advance requesting the one near the fire place. We booked an early table (being a works night out, 530pm is the perfect time to get the party started); but on arrival there was some confusion about the name that the table was booked under and we were sat at one table then asked to move to another; neither was near fireplace! I should have taken this as a sign of what was to come. The place was slowly starting to fill up but it certainly wasn’t busy when we got there. It took about 15 minutes for a waiter to take our drinks order.Eventually the drinks arrived and we placed our orders. The burgers are definitely the highlight of their menu.Burgers ordered varied between the Hawaiian – bacon, pineapple and mature cheddar; The Three Alarm – monteray jack cheese, jalepenos, chipotle mayo and a spicy salsa; Portabella Veg Burger with portabello mushroom, sundried tomatoes, mozzarella, chargrilled peppers, rocket, mayo and relish; and the nachos.I ordered the Hawaiian. It’s a good burger. Slightly pink, very juicy and tasty. The burger bun is soft and fluffy, the pineapple soft and sweet and well cooked bacon (no fatty rind to remove). The chips were good too. Comments about the other burgers were that they were good too. Everyone did enjoy their food.Only one gripe with this place is the service. It was appalling! And unfortunately that has made a huge impact on the rating. Not only did they overcharge us; they also couldn’t split the bill to allow individuals to pay separately; and they forgot to remove dishes already paid for from the bill. They are not able to refund remotely so I now have to make a very conscience effort to return in order to obtain my refund.Their burgers are good but with so many great burger joints in opening in Edinburgh at the moment, there poll position has slipped. Unless they really up their service, I doubt I will ever return (for my refund yes. For food no!) tartanspoon.co.uk
I’ve been to The Cambridge Bar on many different occasions and it never failed me. Schiehallion on tap is always a good treat after a long day at work. Accompanied by one of their burgers tastes even better! I had their Three Alarm once which is lovely and quite spicy so if you like spicy food go for it! However, they have a great selection of hot sauces so even if you order just a classic burger you can always make it special with a different sauce. The meat is always cooked to perfection, pink in the middle how it should be. The best to finish the meal is by ‘digestivo’ and The Cambridge Bar offers a good selection of single malts so go for it if you like it my way! The place is usually busy so if you plan to eat, book in advance. It’s great just for drinks, very chilled atmosphere and the crowd that goes there is usually pretty friendly.
So what can I say about this place? If you like beer. If you like burgers. If you like beer and burgers together. Why aren’t you here?Question answers my question. On a serious note get yourself here if you like the two mentioned above. I do and if I could eat here every day I happily would.Amazing. Staff amazing and the place is very rustic in feel.Thankfully it’s still a bit of a hidden gem with its placement so therefore isn’t usually too busy .. let’s keep the secret between us tho yeah?Sorry for the lack of photos… didn’t take the phone with me!
An absolute gem of a pub – the burgers are the best in Edinburgh and they have a great selection of beers. As an Aussie it’s great to see a pub which doesn’t serve Fosters – that’s the sign of a place which knows its beer. Highly recommended.
Forgot the chains, one of the best burgers in town. Having visited wannaburger and GBK and paid quite a lot for nothing particularly amazing, I was interested to try somewhere off the beaten track for a burger. Cambridge Bar is the place to go. Burgers were big, fresh, and they had such a variety of different toppings. I shared chips and onion rings with my friend and they were also very good. They also have a good selection of drinks available. Only complaint would be the lack of atmosphere and the staff who weren’t the happiest, regardless the burgers are amazing and it is well worth a visit,.
A One Trick Pony, but What a Trick!. Just a couple of hundred yards down the road from the Oxford Bar, made famous in Ian Rankin’s Rebus novels, the Cambridge Bar might be less famous internationally, but is just as well used by locals. Both bars share features I love about traditional Edinburgh pubs. Lots of wood, total absence of a TV and small intimate bar areas with lots of seating hidden around corners. However, where the Ox specialises beer & converstaion, The Cambridge Bar is rightly billed as the best place to buy a burger in Edinburgh. They serve nothing else on the menu, but when you have this amount choice (everything from good old bacon & cheese to chicken breast & avocado) executed this well, why bother with lots of other dishes cluttering your menu.I can only wish that more pubs learned this lesson; it’s far better to do one thing spectacularly well, than a bunch of things half well.To my mind they serve the best burgers in town, but if someone knows anywhere better I’d be happy to try.
