We stayed in a flat down the street from The Oxford and decided to stop in before heading in to shower. What a great atmosphere! The young bartender was so engaging. He was heading to Hong Kong a few days later. We hope he had a blast. It is a small place, but everyone was very welcoming to our group of three Americans. Welcoming and friendly; I wish this pub was down the street from my home.
An oddity in Edinburgh, a stolid regulars’ pub with no garnishings of music, craft beers, artisan ciders or quinoa chittlings – it’s an old-fashioned affair. Which is good on the one hand; lack of pretence and voguishness keep the New Town thrillseekers well away. But on the other hand, don’t bother trying to thaw the frosty reception in the front bar – it’s like running a Belhaven gauntlet and none of the septuagenarian homunculuses at the bar will step aside to let you make your order in comfortable earshot of the barman. The back room boasts a roaring fire and there’s always an affordable dram of the week to cap off a solid evening’s drinking and if literary intrigue is your thing, you probably already know that Rebus replenishes his grey matter here, as does his creator Ian Rankin.
