One of the best fish suppers in Edinburgh. The Tailend is a chippy with attached restaurant. I’ve been here a few times now and always enjoy the fish supper, the portion size is generous and tastes fresh and delicious. However, on my latest visit I thought I’d be different and try the spaghetti carbonara. The dish tasted of pretty much nothing which was disappointing. I would recommend The Tailend but only if you are going to stick to their famous fish and chips! myfoodwishlist.co.uk

Still Good, Just No Longer Great. When I moved to Leith having been a New Town boy previously, I was placed in the touchy position of having to transfer my top-chippie loyalty from La Alba D’oro to the Tailend. After my first few attempts I was happy to concede parity, if not the superiority, of this Leith Walk wonder – that Edinburgh had two such great chippies was something to be proud of.However, since the owner left to set-up the Tailend St Andrews, there has been a small, but noticeable fall off in quality. I couldn’t put my finger on it until I took the chance during a recent visit to St Andrews to check out his new baby. In St Andrews, the batter was light as heaven, the chips had crunch, but a soft fluffy centre. Everything was as perfect as I recalled. In Leith these days, they just aren’t frying as well as they used to. The batter is a little too heavy, the chips just a little soggy. The Tailend Leith is still a well above average fish & chip shop, but it is no longer the pre-eminent institution it once was.
Used to visit the owners when they were in anstruther, glad the best fish and chips are now in Edinburgh.
Bite Review of The Tailend. BITE RUNS MONTHLY DINING EVENTS AND THE IDEA FOR ‘POSH FISH ‘N’ CHIPS CAME WHEN I VISITED COLIN CROMAR WHO RUNS THE RESTAURANT. COLIN USED TO BE A PARTNER AT THE FAMOUS ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR IN THE EAST NEUK OF FIFE AND HE HAS TRANSPORTED THE CONCEPT OF A REALLY GOOD QUALITY FISH AND CHIP RESTAURANT TO EDINBURGH. LUCKY US!Colin is very passionate about fish as is his partner, fish merchant Gordon Spinks, who supplies The Tailend. Our evening began with the perfect aperitif in the form of a few bottles of Bollinger from Henderson Wines in Morningside and some fishy tapas such as dressed crab. Whilst we munched, and Colin cooked, Gordon talked to us about how he trawls the coast for the freshest, seasonal catches available. The hake was recommended for our main course, fried or grilled. I chose the healthy grilled option and the juicy tender flesh flaked from the fork and melted in my mouth. Fish is one of the most nutritious and delicious foods around and the range available at The Tailend make it a destination even for those watching their waistline. We all had bowls of chunky, golden chips to tip onto our plates and one of our members liked the food so much, he had it all twice! The evening ended with some lovely, creamy Luca’s ice cream, tea and coffee and a prize draw where Bite Club gave away two tickets to the foodie festival, Taste.
Best fish in edinburgh! Battered or breaded and fried in front of you.
