Surprising!. An intriguing name for a cafe but, slightly disappointingly, it’s not all tarts! The decor hits you first – black walls and ceiling with fun use of vivid pink and friendly copper – a bit like a funky hairdresser’s. The tables and chairs are eclectic, a little sticky but comfortable, some stencil-sprayed to add an arty feel. Plenty for the eye to rest on while you wait for your order to finally get to you! Yes, service was a little slow but not awful. The food was good though – not exceptional – just decent amounts of sensible grub and an inviting array of cakes. Good bread and tea leaves for a change. Staff were a little unfocussed but friendly. All in all, we were comfortable, not crowded out or deafened, and definitely not ripped-off with the bill. Shame about the unisex toilet but I like things to be a little off-the-wall and if you do, give it a go. I’ll go back sometime.

Great breakfast. Yougart with berries fantastic. Pancakes were large and totally loved by 7 yo. Porridge was very good. Didn’t open till 10 so breakfast was a bit late but worth the wait.
