You might not find this place unless you literally stumbled across it, which I did (not to worry – I didn’t hurt myself). Its outside presence is a menu display behind glass on an adjacent wall and a door leading up to some forbidding stairs. With some trepidation, up the stairs I went to a more appealing view and a hostess desk. The signage appeared to indicate that it was members only and chided those who deigned to enter with inappropriate dress. As it turns out membership was not required and despite my rather shabby appearance I was allowed to enter; the hostess providing a bright smile and pointing to yet more flights of stairs. I inquired later and was told there are elevators (lifts) for those unable to navigate said obstacles. On the next level is a pleasant looking lounge area before a second hostess appeared to sit me at my table. The primary eating area consists of a well-lit bright room with tall ceilings framed by a wall of windows on one side and a lit translucent marble bar on the other. Lovely chandeliers grace the ceiling. Each table had its own wine chilling bucket and chairs that seem to have for the most part transitioned from well-worn elegance to down-in-the-heels dowager shabby. Nevertheless the look and feel is elegant and impressive. Somewhat formal but inviting at the same time. My server, Leah took good care of me throughout my meal, making apropos suggestions, serving and clearing appropriately in a manner that encouraged savoring the food and the ambience with no rush, and always appearing with a twinkle and a smile. I decided on a beef bourguignon with a side salad and mixed vegetables. As I sipped a Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban (American oak followed by Portuguese port casks – lovely!) I was treated to some piping hot bread cut at the table. Steam whisped up from the slices of tomato parmesan loaf. Marvellous. So rare these days to be served such fresh and tasty bread. The house salad was extreme – a very large portion of coleslaw-like greens but oh so much better than your average fare. It was almost the highlight of the meal. Again expectations were surpassed. The beef itself was fork-splitting tender with a nice gravy and tasty mashed potatoes on the side. My other side dish, mixed vegetables, was the only disappointment. The broccoli and carrots seemed to be an afterthought with no seasoning and no reason for being. I understand that some people prefer their healthy stuff au naturel, but I prefer a bit more fair treatment for the unwelcome cousins at the grill house. Some pizazz would be nice. I highly recommend the Spanish Rioja red at 5.25 per glass. It was a pleasure to linger over the smooth and balanced wine as I contemplated life in an atmosphere that invited you to do so if you happen to be dining alone. But really, do bring along some friends. This restaurant conjures a spirit that is best enjoyed with others.
