About
The Black Bull in Moffat is reputed to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest hostelry in Scotland. Built in 1568 it is certainly steeped in history. At one time it was the headquarters of the Earl of Dundee and his company of Dragoons; nicknamed Bloody Cleavers for their persecution of Scottish Presbyterians. In more peaceful times it was a favourite watering hole for the bard Robert Burns who once engraved a pane of glass with some locally-inspired verses; the original pane now being in St Petersburg after it was presented to the future Tsar Nicholas I in 1817. Today following a 500k refurbishment the Black Bull is now a luxurious 15 bedroom boutique hotel, boasting all modern facilities, without losing any of its natural charm. In the atmospheric bar you will find an exciting range of cask and craft ales, complemented of course by an excellent range of both highland and lowland malts. Those dining at the Black Bull will also enjoy a fantastic experience; whether inside or on our outside terrace. Our menu features only the very best of traditional puddings and pies complemented by a wide range of different flavoured mash potatoes ranging from a traditional creamy mash to colcannon or even a sharp horseradish mash and of course we always have a range of daily specials.
