I’m a little unsure about this place. When invited here for lunch I knew nothing about the Canny Man’s quirkiness/rules/odd decor and thought we would just be going out for a pub lunch. On arrival the place is unusually decorated. Its full! There are some parts I like but I did look up and found a life sized mannequin suspended from the ceiling. The menu is extensive and a little hard to understand. As it is so many choices on it the writing is rather small and is a little overwhelming. Luckily my friend had visited before and knew the rules on how to place an order and what exactly the Smorrebord consists of. We ended up having the No 57 – The Putter (Lamb with red cabbage and crispy bacom) and the No 63 – Robin’s Choice (chicken, rare beef and ham with onion rings). You write this down in the notepad provided and hand it to your waiter. Not really having any clue as to what would arrive, when it did arrive I was a little astonished as to what you got for the price paid. The Robin’s Choice consisted of a slice of ham, a slice of rare beef and a slice of chicken, two lettuce leaves, a slice of tomato, a slice of radish, a quarter boiled egg and a small slice of rye bread. For 8.95 I would have expected something a little more special.Still the ham was gorgeous, the rye bread tasty and one thing I did appreciate was there was no salad dressing drowning my greens!I’ve been, it might be a while before I return tartanspoon.co.uk

I had heard a lot of praise of the Canny Man’s from a colleague at work and I was sorely disappointed. Yes, it’s quirky decor gives it a very unique and cool look, bar staff are all suited and they have a very very good selection of whiskys available… but still, I did not find myself at home there. Maybe it was the prizes, maybe the suited men and women around us, maybe their ban on lots of things (from backpacks to credit cards)… I guess I will have to give it a second chance since their Bloody Marys are apparently awesome.. madaboutravel.com

The food that we had could not be faulted. We were only offered the Sunday Roast, although it appeared others were offered a larger menu (we got what we came for so didn’t mind). It was delicious, massive portions. However, have to agree an earlier review, everything about the place is just a bit odd. It was almost as if we felt we needed to whisper. Service was good but be sure to check the rules before you walk in, we didn’t notice them.A little on the pricey side.

A 1871 former Public house in the heart of Morningside, hip and wonderful, old and contemporary at the same time, is the perfect place for an english tea or a super glam bloody Mary. Somebody wrote once that this is the best pub in the world. I highly recommend you to come and have a look. You’ll fall in love!

When you walk into the bar it is an odd experience. You glance around and see suits and well-to-do men and women at the tables, offset by the creepy furnishing of old children’s toys hanging down from the ceiling. It creates a dark feel to the bar, and as we all know so well, first impressions are everything. The staff are all suited and booted too, looking like they should be in the 1930’s, and the drinks are relatively expensive – although that was to be expected. The standard of the drinks are very high, so they obviously take good care of the lines and clean them on a regular basis.I have personally never tried the food, although I have heard second hand that it is meant to be superb, but I can’t bring myself to fork out the money on the food from a bar with such unique decor – and not in a good way. I will try it someday though because it has a good reputation, shame about the first impression which gave off an impression of snobbery.

Dinnae Mess wi’ the Canny Man’s. This is the Marmite of Edinburgh pub restaurants. Let me explain; you either love the fact that it has a long list rules (which will be enforced with almost brutal enthusiasm by the staff) banning everything from credit cards & cameras to backbacks & mobiles, or you hate it as a series of ridiculous impositions. I happen to enjoy the retro/other worldly feel of taking out cash, hiding my mobile, reading the world’s most cheerfully elitist menu, then writing my own order down on pads provided, before putting it in a special place so the waitress will pick it up. I wouldn’t want to do it every meal, but there are hundreds of restaurants where the customer is always right mentality is followed to extremes, so it feels right that there is one place says, these are the rules, get lost if you don’t like them.Of course this is only possible because it can attract customers on it own terms. Some come for the slightly Soviet block customer service, some the quite incredible British Museum meets junk shop interior. What brings me back, however, is the incredible wine list & beer selection and the fantastic array of top quality open sandwiches in which the Canny Man’s specializes. All in all, I’d advise anyone to try it once; whether you go back or not will place you on either side of this particular Morningside Marmite Debate.
