If it’s a coffee, pint or food, The Merlin is a great place to relax with friends. Dined there a few times, had issues once, it was rectified immediately. The issue was only due to running out of breakfast items. Yes, you may have to wait, but hey, what’s the hurry. It’s a nice pub, located in a great location to watch the world go by.
This is just an average pub, with an average selection of drinks, with an average food menu, cooked to an average standard.The bar is huge, spanning two floors, but the upper floor is used for functions only, and also an outside seating area. The list of lagers is comprehensive, but they lack real ales, and on my last five visits they have had none at all. It’s not all bad, they do have Belhaven Best, Guinness and Blue Moon, so there is a good selection of lager, cider and those three to choose from as well.The spirits range is quite large also, so that means that you can get a drink that you’d like, and they often have deals on for spirits or bottled beers which are worth a look. The food menu is average, but the prices are cheaper compared to some of the other Morningside bars. The mixed grill and the fish and chips that I have had were alright, but I was never going to clamber onto the rooftops and shout about them.
Alright. The Merlin is a bit of an up and down place. Sometimes their food is really good and sometimes really bad. Their staff are friendly and if there is a complaint tend to be happy to fix it. Sometimes you can be left waiting and a little forgoten at times due to lack of staff but overall not a bad place.
