This cafe brings back so many memories of when I used to study in Edinburgh. It’s situated right at the corner of grass market where I used to enjoy the summer sunshine while sipping my coffee and admiring the splendid view of the medieval castle. I had the chance of visiting Edinburgh again and made it a point to end up at Cafe Jacques and order my fav honey cake.

My girlfriend and I went to this cafe for a late breakfast, attracted to its cosy outlook. However, we were highly disappointed. From the misspelled items on the menu, to the grumpy waitress, we felt that this cafe was unacceptably unprofessional. From the outset, upon trying to make (very) small alterations to the menu for dietary reasons (e.g. substitution of a fried egg for a second potato scone), we were met with a series of huffs from the waitress and general unfriendliness (for example, when she came to bring our cutlery, she dropped it on the table quite rudely).Furthermore, the food did not deliver. Several items from the menu were not in stock, and various things were absent from our orders (such as the mushrooms from the vegetarian breakfast, the requested milk for the coffee and the presence of an unwelcome fried egg!).Finally, the quality of the food wasn’t brilliant. The vegetarian breakfast, despite some errors, was acceptable and quite nice, but the mozzarella ‘melt’ was burnt on the exterior, with a highly unmelted/cooked centre (raw mozzarella and tomato). All in all, we were not satisfied with the meal, and would highly recommend avoiding this cafe and giving your custom to one more deserving.
