Ate here on Saturday, early evening before attending ‘The Tattoo’ Good welcome from the Patron and friendly waiters. There was a special Festival menu which we all had.Choice of around 5 for each course. I had the chicken with peppers and mash, others had the vegetarian option or the pork. All commented on their meal being delicious.Pavlova with ice cream and fruit was the popular choice for dessert, again attractively served and good. We hadn’t eaten here before but the rest of the family had, hence being there. We’ll certainly visit again soon.

Very pleasant romantic meal out. The menu was authentic, imaginative and well balanced. My friend is allergic to shell fish and the staff knew exactly what was in their dishes. The pudding menu was wonderful – we couldn’t but have some!

Pleasant restaurant. Lovely food. Friendly service. Not cheap but a worthwhile treat. Enjoyed items that are not often on a menu Pigeon and Rabbit. Recommended.

I had been excited to try ‘La Garrigue’ for some time. It has innumerable accolades and has been featured as one of Gordon Ramsay’s favourite French restaurants on ‘Ramsay’s Best Restaurant’. It boasts delicious local ingredients, an actual Languedoc chef and a lovely view over Calton Hill.Lucky were we then, when s.o. and I were taken out by his lovely mother for a spot of lunch to sample some French delights. La Garrigue does a splendid 3-course lunch menu for 17.00, with the option of having just two courses also. We tactfully chose a different option each for the courses in order to sample as much fine food as possible. As the menu changes daily to reflect the produce they get in, I can’t recall the exact wording of our dishes, however, I can assure you that we were very pleased with the options given to us. To start we had salmon pate, livers, and the rabbit terrine. I enjoyed my terrine very much, it was perfectly set and very delicious. For our mains, we had the fish of the day, a lamb stew and a stuffed chicken breast (pictured). The fresh fish, wish was served rather magnificently on the bone, looked absolutely superb and this would be my choice if I were to return. S.O. had the lamb stew which I thought was rather tasty and beautifully seasoned, with layers of gorgeous flavours. My chicken was also really splendidly done, with perfectly crispy skin, a wonderfully flavoured sauce and as-light-as-you-like mashed potatoes. I had to pass on desert and went for a coffee instead, but the others had a berry mouse and a berry pudding, both of which were very tasty. I was impressed by the food and it was very reminiscent of my own style of cooking, which is hearty, true and honest flavours (v. French!). S.O. was less impressed and he felt it was a little bit of a let down given the hype, but I’m inclined to think it’s because he’s a bit spoiled at home! We had mixed feelings about the staff, they were kind enough to fit us in to a full lunch schedule and when another table became free they informed us we were free to stay as long as we liked. However, service during the meal was cold and one waiter in particular (I think I remembered him from Ramsays’s show) was so brusque it bordered on rude. It’s not really acceptable to say that this is the French way of doing things, but you never know whether someone is having a particularly bad day, so judgement will be reserved on this front.I would certainly return to La Garrigue, for the food was delicious and wholesome. It’s a lovely location with a buzzing atmosphere, which means definitely book in advance as we were very lucky to be squeezed in. It is perhaps more of a day location than an evening one, due to the gorgeous day views and our conclusion that though the food was good it wasn’t remarkable, La Garrigue remains a wonderful little spot that’s worth a gander. For the whole cake, go to: http://gastronomicum.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/la-garrigue-edinburgh.html gastronomicum.blogspot.com

Not impressed, 45 a head for dinner with a 1/2 bottle of poor house Rose. Fish under seasoned, partridge with lardons salty as you like.
