Apart from the service- we had a great night here. The food and drinks were good and filling. A mixed bag- fish and chips, pasta, seafood- and the drinks were good too! Shame the service was so uninspired. It was like they just couldn’t be bothered.
Very good quality price relation. The fish and chips is quite famous, winner of multiple awards, and it is really easy to say why 🙂 good vegetarian options and a good selection of bottled beers. Would definitely come back
Pleasantly surprised by our dinner here. Shrouded by average reviews, we were a little sceptical about how much we could possibly enjoy the meal. However, my duck in grand marnier sauce was delicious! Tender meat with a smooth, rich sauce. More home cooking than fancy French kitchen, but still enjoyed it. The staff we very accommodating and the view over Victoria st was impressive. Lovely place to spend a balmy Edinburgh evening. Would like to see a few more options on the menu and inside is in need of a spruce, but outside dining’s a winner.
We ate here with high expectations from the exterior and interior which looked cosy, candles, cushioned area and a seemingly relaxed atmosphere. Food…..disappointing, I had salmon enveloped in a chicken breast with leeks ( this really does not work) and it was in a sauce that was tasteless. This came with limp vegetables and part boiled baby potatoes. My partner had salmon and veggies, again nothing
Beautiful -especially outside. The four of us had a great meal at Maxie’s! Took the advice of others and went in then straight back to the relatively quiet balcony overlooking the lower street. Service is kind of a catch-as-catch-can affair but all very friendly. Haggis, nips, and tatties were tasty. Spicy enchilada delicious. Scottish Salmon special very good. We’ve also gone back for a quick bump before a whiskey tour and had a quiet sit inside.
Absolutely lovely my husband our four year old daughter and I popped in here today for some food and it was yummy. I had read mixed reviews actually while sitting waiting for our food but we had absolutely nothing to fret food was delicious we will be back soon.
Walk down the Stairs past lautrec-style painted posters into a comfortabke and warm ambuanc and the sounds of jamie cullum or miles davis Eclectic french bistro inspired menu, a good wine list, relaxed but prompt service and you gave the ingredients of a relaxed and convivial night out. Handy for several old-town events during the festival, and just off the top of the Royal Mile.
