I forgot how much I loved this place!I went for food with friends back when it opened and it was really great. Seeing the food coming out last night it seems the standards haven’t slipped. My friends and I went for a few drinks last night. The staff were really friendly and despite the fact it was busy found a table for us. I love the decor here- an industrial, old-modern feel and the booths upstairs are gorgeous! We decided to share a Midnight Moonshine Rising cocktail pitcher, which was 21 and yielded around 5 servings. However, this is no scabby nightclub pitcher. A vast quantity of premium spirits were used to make our cocktail, and despite it’s alcoholic content it did not taste strong- like any good cocktail should! It was one of the best drinks I’ve EVER had- think mince pies, citrus and delicious spicy, warming flavours. This is such a gem hidden past all the not so salubrious venues in the Cowgate, and is definitely worth a visit. The wood burning stove and rustic vibe make OX184 the perfect winter warmer. twentysomethinglifeandstyle.com

I love this place. For multiple reasons actually.(1) Kitchen is open till 3am(2) Complete casual dining(3) I love the industrial vibe (ie. the caged shelves, Edison bulbs, concrete flooring, raw plaster, exposed pipes….)(4) Always a great selection of ales on tap (that changes frequently)(5) Food is great and….in smaller portions. As it’s a food review, I’m going to skip talking about numbers 1-4. But number 5? Well what I meant about the smaller portion is that because the mains come literally as it is (without any sides), you can opt and decide how big or small you want your meal to be. Moreover, because the starters are quite a decent size as well I’ve even had combos of 2 starters and a side or 1 starter 2 sides, etc. But there was once i did order 2 starters and 2 sides, and i regretted feeling greedy that day.Right, down to whats good. My husband and I have our personal favourites and newly discovered favourites. I’m more of a use-your-hands-to-eat kind of person. And my husband doesn’t like to get his delicate finger winkies dirty. So you’ll see what kind of foods we tend to lean to.I love the ribs (wasn’t dry at all, and I could only finish the half rack), the hot rib tips and chicken wings (both from the starters). Also the bacon corn muffins (had bits of bacon chunks in it). I wasn’t too keen on the piglets though as I felt that were just way to salty for me. Same goes for the house sausage. My husband? He always orders and loves the chicken and lobster brioche. But i think he prefers the chicken the most. Now the sides? You MUST try the burnt end beans. We love it. If you’re wondering what the wedge salad is? Think a whole iceberg lettuce, cut in a quarter and put in a bowl…whole. They then drizzle the salad sauce and croutons on. Haha, I mean it’s a side salad so how can I complain (but just a teeny bit lazy no? Embracing the whole rustic look just a bit too much?).Desserts? We ‘used’ to love the banoffee. Until we discovered…the white chocolate and peanut butter cheesecake! And the double chocolate bourbon brownie!

I find the food in the place tasteless with not a single flavour to make it good. The salad I ordered was boring and not something I would never order again. The chicken was ahhhh. worldoffaz.wordpress.com

I love this place!! It ticks every box.The service is exceptional. I’ve been in twice now and the staff are superb. Well done Ox184 on hiring some of the most friendly, helpful, professionalstaff there is (and especially during the festival when most Edinburgh people are rather grumpy). The food is delicious. It has the starters (good portion size) for those just wanting to nibble on something whilst having something to drink – I had the shrimp and lobster sliders and the chips with cheese sauce; by far the BEST chips in Edinburgh; but it also have the burgers and the delicious baby back ribs. The atmosphere and dcor is industrial but open and welcoming. The large doors open right onto the street and they have nice, more private booths upstairs. One additional bonus is that they serve food till 3am (430am during the festival) when 99% of places that serve food in Edinburgh close between 9pm and 10pm. The only wee thing that I can comment negatively on is the position of the WC’s. They are a bit of a trek if you are sitting downstairs!Fabulous place. Fabulous food. Fabulous staff. tartanspoon.co.uk

Time to cast ourselves back. That is, I must confess that s.o. and I made this visit some time ago. But life gets in the way, and blog posts are put on hold. But now, with nothing but the dregs of the summer ahead of me, it’s time to get going again.I’ll make things simple for the both of us. OX 184 is great. When I first moved to Edinburgh in 2011, I was living on the Cowgate. *shock*, *horror*, I hear you say, and, well, it was. But now that OX have moved in, and are capitalizing on a distinct lack of trendy and contemporary bars on the road, I’m not sure that I wouldn’t move back there. (N.B. notice the double negative). But in all seriousness, OX is a great joint. I really felt that both the atmosphere and the service hit the proverbial nail on the head and, having just got back from NYC, I think this place keeps up with the best of them. What’s more is that I LOVE the fact that OX serve their full menu well into the night, which means if you are among those who like to hit the Hive every now and again, you can always jump out for a bite between disco dancing to One Direction and Nicky Minaj.S.O. and I ate a burger, a strip of pork belly, a plate of fries, some coleslaw, and a couple of lobster buns, because honestly, why wouldn’t you? All of the above was really great, and was what it said on the tin. We both agreed that the lobster buns were particularly tasty, and that we could have just had a plate of those. But, for there is a but, we were well aware that this menu caters for a particular kind of clientele. Separate friends of ours have lamented both the non-vegetarian friendliness of the place and the trendiness. But from our point of view, these were the two things we liked most about OX.I really think OX is a game changer for the Cowgate, and in a very good way. The food falls right between fine dining and 3 o’clock in the morning sopping-up-my-mistakes. That is to say, it’s neither, but it’s pretty tasty fare for a knees up. gastronomicum.blogspot.com

Pretty cool vibe, with an industrial-chic look and food that’s good but nothing to rave about, though the service was really friendly.Had some interesting and tasty quinoa fritters then an okay pulled pork roll with a side of very cheesy macaroni cheese. Person I was eating with (and paying) had a pretty big Caesar salad with nice-looking charred chicken and a side of quite tasty chips. It’s maybe more about the drinks though, and I think it would be a cool place to share a pitcher of beer or cocktails, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night when they have a DJ. 22ten.blogspot.com
