Whenever I hear the name Rudi three thoughts spring to mind. One is a deeply harrowing memory that I don’t like recalling, one is a song called Rudi’s In Love and the other is a fine, but small cafe on Forrest Road in Edinburgh. The service is always with a smile and the place is so small that to get your food in a decent amount of time you need to get in before the school children, university students and staff from nearby buildings descend on this diminutive joint. The reason it is so busy is because the food is really affordable for the centre of Edinburgh and the cost of a sandwich the quality is also very high. The prices in all the years I’ve visited have not jumped up massively, but instead have remained similar, with only marginal increases.Rudi’s loses out on marks for the way in which they force your hand to decide what you want for lunch, with pre-determined fillings in the sandwiches. This is a shame as it means that Rudi’s loses out on the individuality factor, which is important for many small delis, especially in a condensed area such as Forrest Road.
