Great atmosphere, decent coffee, extremely sweet and awkward home made ginger beer & quirky decoration but terrible service as the waitress did not greet us, made eye contact, thank us or talk at all. Fun fact, this place used to be the Nicolson’s Cafe, and I used to go there for a coffee between my shift breaks when I was working at the (now defunct) De Niro’s Restaurant, that was 24 years ago… when J K Rowling was getting her cuppa there too…
Quirky decor, great food, massive windows… what more could you want from one of the best places in Edinburgh for brunch? Honestly, I could go back to Spoon every day as it always gives me what I want. From their fabulous brunches to their fantastic cakes, everything here invites you to bring a book, order cake and tea and relax… madaboutravel.com

Recently popped into Spoon for a quick afternoon drink and ended up staying for some cheesy chips. Rumored to be one of the places J.K.Rowling composed those books, whatever they were called, it’s a cute spot with funky decor and lovely service. I had their home-made ginger beer and s.o. their cola. I really liked mine after I realized all the cordial was at the bottom and you were supposed to stir it! The first two sips were potent, much like I would imagine Polyjuice Potion tastes like. The cola was also good, and not too sweet, so points for turning something ordinary into something unique. Our cheesy chips were delish and hit the mid-afternoon spot perfectly. Glancing at the menu it does look interesting, with plenty of choice, but nothing really stood out and I think it is probably a bit overpriced for what it is. Certainly it would seem that other reviews suggest this too. That said, for what we were there for it ticked all the boxes. Not much else to say really apart from I adore their mismatching plates, pop in and try it for yourself! gastronomicum.blogspot.com
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW AS IT’S A COMBINATION OF TWO DIFFERENT VISITS – ONE GOOD & ONE NOT SO GOOD.A concept with a serious amount of potential which just didn’t succeed on this visit. Relaxed canteen style meets a menu which promises a fair amount but ultimately under delivers. We tried the 2course pre-theatre menu as the a la carte was intimidatingly priced for a quick Friday bite. The tomato, mozzarella and rocket salad was pleasant and did exactly what it said on the tin but the main courses were pretty flat and poorly executed. The macaroni, cherry tomatoes and pea dish was exactly just that – bland and cooked without heart or imagination. The salt beef with mustard mash and kale was an over-seasoned punch in the mouth which became a chore to churn through. A surprise chunk of wood hidden in the mash was not good at all – especially when the waitress informed us that no wood is used in the kitchen.Having said that, the staff, the wine and the atmosphere were lovely. A disappointment this time but would try again – perhaps for lunch or an a la carte dinner. Everyone has their off days!UPDATE – As I said, Spoon probably deserved another go.We popped here with a larger group following a Fringe show. The place was heaving and the room had a good buzz. We ordered a number of dishes including; ploughman’s, beef burger and quinoa pilaf. I ordered pollock with chorizo and roasted potatoes which was absolutely delicious – simple but effective flavour combination well executed. The entire group enjoyed their meals & the staff were again fantastic. Most importantly the much needed bloody Marys were great.Would recommend this place but expect an either or experience based on my visits!
This is not even a rubbish cafe.. This is a resturaunt. It fails on every level at being a cafe. The staff apear to have no idea how tea works. We got a three person pot and it had only one small spoonful of tea in it, and was therefore little more than brown water.I can’t tell you about thier food because we weren’t give a menu and when asked, the prodused a dessert menu, ice cream doesn’t really go with tea…The toilets aren’t sign posted at all and the staff don’t seem to pay attention to whether or not you have a question to ask and we ended up assuming we had to order at the bar they took so long to serve us, and then they told us they would be right with us, AND mucked up the order.Don’t go here. go to any of the other cafe’s in the immediate area. they are all far, far better.
Love this place and wood definitely reccommend it. The pre-theatre menu for 12 or 14 quid is good value for 2-3 courses. Lovely food and brilliant atmosphere.
