I like Holyrood 9a. Have been going to try it for a while and so glad we headed here for our monthly Work Burger-a-thon!The decor is warm, inviting and comfortable with an understated Scottish feel – stags heads, leather seats, wooden panelling, large fireplaces. The specialise in burgers – beef, chicken, vegetarian and alternative (haggis/pork/venison) and have lovely sounding starters such as a Prosciutto and Pear Salad and desserts such as Doughnuts and Beer Ice Cream. The one thing I loved the most is that their burgers are served with chips and it’s included in the price! I hate when you have to order and pay chips seperately. Just give me one price please! All served on wooden boards, and chips served in a bowl; the presentation is nice.I had the Blue Murder Burger and my colleagues chose between The BBQ, The Falafel, The Halloumi and the Venison. The Blue Murder Burger – beef patty, smoky bacon, blue murder cheese, beetroot relish and a tabasco-cumin ketchup. It looked delicious, it smelled delicious. The patty is thick, juicy and seasoned well. The brioche bun was super fresh and soft.T he ketchup was very spicy and the relish was sweet. Personally I think there is too much going on in this burger as the taste of blue cheese and smoky bacon was lost due to the overpowering relish and ketchup. But I did enjoy it! Every biteful is enjoyable (just next time I’ll ask them to hold off on the ketchup).Everyone else’s burger looked great, fries were good especially the sweet potato fries. Overall feedback – a great big thumbs up.So far on our quest to find the best burger in Edinburgh, Holyrood 9a has taken the lead. They also have a great list of beers, ales and ciders. The place is busy so best to book. tartanspoon.co.uk

The Holyrood 9A is literally just down the road from my flat and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to try it out. This place specialises in burgers, there are a lot of options. I had the BBQ burger and it was absolutely delicious. The patty was quite thick and really juicy, you could tell that it was really good quality. The chips were also delicious although I have to say I think I enjoyed my date’s sweet potato fries more, of which I stole quite a few. Oops. We went for lunch on a Saturday and it was really busy so maybe book in advance for peak times. waterpainteddreams.com

Food ClubHolyrood 9A, EdinburghFriday 21st November 2014Your favourite food bloggers were back in Edinburgh on Friday and preparing themselves for another great night. The low temperatures and horrible rain could not dampen our spirits and we walked from Waverley to our destination. We were seated at the back of the restaurant on a comfy laid back couch. The selection of beers was extensive and mesmerising. They offer smaller pints (Halfs or Thirds) giving us the best chance to sample the fine nectar on show. All I can say is that the Lagers & Ales were delightful and a fine accompaniment to the meal. I wont try and name them all but I will encourage you to mix it up. The one with Grapefruit was my favourite. Now on to the food, The Appetiser side of the menu was a little underwhelming in terms of choice with only 4 to choose from. We got the Garlicky Flat cap Mushrooms which were great and strong in flavour. We also got some Rye bread with dipping oils and the fried buttermilk chicken, delicate & crunchy with a zingy lemon mayo to compliment the pallet.Excitement had been building for the main course. You just cant beat a cold beer and burger with the boys. The menu offered a wide variety of Beef, Chicken, Vegetarian and even some alternatives with Haggis & Venison. However, we pride ourselves on loving the beef & tucked in. The Chilli Death was a combination of pickled jalepeno, fresh chillies, sour cream, smoked cheddar & chilli jam. The burger was brilliant but a let down on the spicy side but try telling that to one such member who was wiping the heat sweats throughout. The Italienne burgers were beautiful, melted buffalo mozzarella, sun blushed tomato & a pesto mayo. The Holyrood BBQ was packed with smoked bacon, red onion, peppers & smoked cheddar with a tangy BBQ sauce. The similar named Holyrood had Hop cheese, Beer mustard mayo and a caramelised onion mayo. The final burger was The Blue Murder topped with a flat cap mushroom, smoked bacon, garlic mayo and punchy blue cheese. Some of us upgraded to sweet potato fries. never a bad decision. We also got some onion rings to share as one pointed out, you know its a good onion ring when you bite it and all the onion doesnt come out at once.Id be lying if I said we hadnt noticed the collection of board games on a shelf. While waiting for the desserts we grasped that old family favourite Pop n Hop clearly Aldis version of Frustration. We played in teams and started a gripping intense game. Our desserts came but there were more important matters at hand. We got a selection of Sticky Toffee Pudding, Chocolate Brownie the Chocoboco Glory. The deserts were great and thoroughly enjoyed. But back to the board game, Things were hotting up and emotions were running high. A few things were said in the heat of the moment but were all friends at the end of the day. Victory was achieved and the losers accepted their fate. We finished the evening by drawing our secret Santa for next months Christmas Extravaganza and headed through to the Grass Market for few more pints.A big thank you as always to the very friendly staff and very pleased to discover another of Edinburghs hidden gems Good Food, Good drink, Good prices and excellent boards game entertainment.

Pretty awesome burgers and they have decent beers on tap. Was always a favourite when I lived over that side of town. The bbq burger was always my burger of choice.

We loved this place!. We loved the burgers here so much that we came twice during our 4 day visit to Edinburgh. If we had tried this place sooner during our visit, we may have visited a few more times. They have a good selection of delicious burgers (i.e., with different toppings) and we would’ve liked to try them all if we had had the chance! We definitely recommend this place if you’re in the mood for a good burger.

To the review below. Ofcourse they couldnt seat you without buying food, especially during the festival! that would be giving up so much money even if there was 8 of you.. one of the biggest venues is a stones throw from the pub!

  • Jolly Wolly

Seats only if you buy food. Should you be in need of some refreshment after a good walk around the park do NOT go there as you will not be seated unless you are going to buy food, there was 8 of us and we were refused a seat in the back area and told it was the Festival rules.Well we will remember you when it is dark and cold and all the tourists have gone, remember winter lasts 6 months in Edinburgh
