Some days Im not blessed with time for considered choices and luxuriant lunchtime loafing. When the grab-and-run approach is required, which often coincides with visits to train stations, Ive enjoyed trips to the Bagel Factory and I had quite a good baked tattie from Spud-u-like on the train, quite recently.Todays pit stop was at the Pasty Shop, which is just at the foot of the steps as you come into Waverley station. Id visited before, but not previously put pen to paper on a review. These little kiosks can often be a rather depressing place to work, so Im sympathetic to counter people who look decidedly fed up. It was a breath of fresh air to find todays server in helpful and chatty mood, so that was a good start to proceedings.’They offer a wide selection of different pasties, prepared in the traditional Cornish style. Fillings are diverse with my eye caught by a pasty filled with chicken and chorizo. The pricetag of 4.39 seemed a little high, but I went with it. I added an espresso to give me a quick jolt before the inevitable choo-choo snooze, which is the cornerstone of virtually every train journey I make. With transaction completed I was on my way. I took the required photo (which was lost in a subsequent phone fail) then tucked in. The pastry casing was quite good and the filling was plentiful and had a warm kick of spice to it, but the expected sweet finish from the chorizo wasnt really there. It was just a generic savoury taste, which was fine, but a little uninspired. The espresso wasnt great, but Id been prepared for that.So overall, the Pasty Shop did the task of providing me with something fairly substantial to digest, but it didnt really set my pulse racing. Ill probably go back again at some point, but its more likely to be out of rushed necessity than reasoned choice.ScoresBlythe scores the Pasty Shop2.5/5 for food2.5/5 for presentation2/5 for setting4/5 for servicegiving an overall 11/20I ate: chicken and chorizo pastyI drank: espressoI wore: concealed pinstripesTotal bill: 6.04 lunchquest.co.uk
