Zuhus is a peri peri chicken restaurant similar to big chain nandos but offers halal meat . When I first visited I was quite happy with my experience but last night I visited after a few weeks and was not happy with food or service . It was 11pm a whole hour before closing time . I ordered 2 pittas which came as wraps and I was told that it was what was on the order . I didn’t agree because I asked for pittas but it had been put in the system wrong so I ate it anyway . Sauces were all gone and tidied away and had to ask several times for them . No burgers were available . Really bad Indian music which didn’t go with the restaurant theme at all , I thought I was sitting in a curry house. Wrap tastes good but wasn’t happy with the cheesy chips , very soggy and oily. Overall I will hesitate to go back .
Just before festival madness descended on Edinburgh, I decided to pop into Zuhus for lunch and I’m so glad I did. This is a fairly new Portuguese Peri-Peri Chicken restaurant; it sclean and bright with a massive window onto the Bridges so you can watch the world go by.I liked the fact that the kitchen is open plan so you can see them cooking your meal and you have to walk passed the kitchen/front of house counter to access the seating area. I choose the Halloumi and Chicken salad. It was delicious. Tasty, large pieces of succulent chicken, Halloumi grilled to perfection and a good plain salad (I requested no salad dressing). The only downside was the waiting staff. The waitress spoke and understood very little English. I had to repeat my order at the counter up to 5 times and then another waitress came over to my table just to confirm once again what I had requested. Its busy now with the festival on, so I do hope that they have hired so desperately required, fabulous waiting staff to compliment their good food. tartanspoon.co.uk
I was excited to see an independent option opening for Peri Peri chicken in Edinburgh so took advantage of being in this part of town one lunch time. The lunch deal is 5.95 for a burger/wrap plus side and a bottomless drink. Which I would say is good value. The restaurant was fairly busy And the food arrived after about 10 mins. The chicken wrap was delicious and fresh with just the right amount of spice. Only negative was hat they put mayo on it – next time I would ask for without. The chips were a bit disappointing – hence the score of 3/5. They had an almost powdery consistency and lacked any real taste. A highlight was the mango and lime dipping sauce which was a delicious tangy addition to the chips. The elderly scottish waiter is so lovely and friendly and definitely added to my enjoyment of the visit. Big thumbs up for hiring him! I would definitely make a return visit if I was in that part of town but maybe just miss out the chips. The wifi was great and I would also say it would be toddler friendly.
Zuhus is a fairly new peri peri chicken restaurant well-located on South Bridge. The menu is in the same vein as other similar restaurants, with a range of different spice levels to choose from. You can choose between a quarter, half, or whole chicken as well as wings, wraps, and burgers. You can also choose to have one or two sides with your chicken. Unlike other restaurants, though, at Zuhus all of the marinades are made fresh on site. The interior of the restaurant is comfortable, with table numbers clearly marked and a bright, colourful feel. The fact that they have bottomless Vimto was also very pleasing to me.I opted for a starter of grilled chicken strips with cheese sauce. It was one of the few things on the menu that I had not seen before so I thought it would be interesting to try. I was not disappointed at all. Soft strips of chicken, tangy with marinade, were nestled in a lake of melted cheese. I was reminded of the Mexican dish queso fundido, which uses mince or chorizo in place of chicken. It was a rich, tasty start to the meal, although it could perhaps have benefited from being served with some tortillas or corn chips to scoop up errant cheese. For the main course, I chose a medium spiced chicken fillet wrap, with a side of corn on the cob. It came out nicely presented in a small crate rather than on a tray. The wrap was stuffed full of chicken, which was fresh and zesty with a kick of chilli behind it. I would certainly advise being realistic about ones spice tolerance; the medium was pleasantly spicy for me but I think any hotter would have been more than I could handle. The corn on the cob had been chargrilled and so was soft but with a pleasant smoky flavour.I had not initially intended to have dessert, but when I was told about the freshly made waffles with fruit and ice cream, my sweet tooth was unable to resist. The waffle was crisp on the outside, but sweet and fluffy within. The vanilla ice cream was fine, and there was a scattering of fresh fruit and chocolate sauce over the top. It was certainly an enjoyable end to the meal, so much so that I forgot to take a picture. Sorry, folks! One thing I would say about Zuhus is that everything is clearly very fresh, and their sauces have a certain vitality that comes from being made on site rather than mass produced. The food is very reasonably priced, and they have a good selection of bottomless drinks beyond the usual cola, diet cola, or lemonade. The food was nice although a few things put me off going back. The portions were decent sized and the chicken was really nice. Nice and spicy just how we like it. What i didn’t like was that the mayonnaise is left out of the fridge and god knows how long it had been there – it was warm and warm mayo is not appealing and probably isn’t that safe. The sauces had dirty nozzles with sauce caked on them which was also off putting. The toilets are sanitary however the only female toilet that exists doesn’t lock!! I think they have a long way to go and the rest of the place needs to live up to the nice food before i would consider going back
