Seems to be always closed now. There’s been a ‘private function’ sign on the doors for weeks and never a light on.20 Jan, 2012Think this place started off well. Presenting itself as a scottish-italian west end revival, after a few visits i think it fails. Menu is pretty poor for choice and far too similar to Velvet Elvis next door. Not my favourite place to eat out atmosphere-wise and food not that great. Pluses are great, friendly staff and nice wines.

My wife and I popped in after a few recommendations from friends. We both opted for a soup and sandwich lunch, at just 4.95 it was great value. The sandwiches were ok, nothing to write home about and lacks a little zing, but at that price how much can you ask for. The soup was (apparently) award winning although there was too much of it and rather disappointingly my wides bowl had a large chip out of it. When the waiter asked us if everything was ok , I said the fod was good but the bowl had a chip. The waiter said I’ll go and shoot the chef. I thought this was a pretty whimsical response. he had asked me , I informed him and he laughs off my concerns. Does nobody train waiting staff anymore to be polite first friendly second and funny a distant third. Apart from this the criterion is a decent place to pop in for lunch with a welcoming relaxed atmosphere. More a causal hang out than anything to impress anyone. If you want to Do that their are several better equipt bars elsewhere. Although in it’s favour the location of the criterion is such that their is little competition of this calibre.

What a gem. Really enjoyed Criterion. It looks fabulous, all wood panelling and high ceilings, and the food is fantastically good value and so delicious. My chicken salad had two generous chunks of juicy, char-grilled meat and the peach melba, with a fresh poached peach instead of a horrid slimy tinned one, was really special. I was very impressed with the little details – home made bread and olive oil for 1 – and there are half portions of pizza and pasta for children, which make this a very family-friendly place to eat out.
