Following a recommendation we were pleasantly surprised by both the quality of service and food at Butternut Squash. Not only are the staff friendly and welcoming, but the food is of great quality! Reasonably priced and very generous portions (only one of us managed dessert!) No card payments, so bring cash. BYOB – great evening meal.
Been here on several occasions now and never been disappointed. Ever changing menu which always has firm favourites, very relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Option to bring your own alcohol aswell if watching pennies!
Myself and the girls made a spontaneous pitt stop here after a wee walk on a fresh, sunny day. A change from our usual haunts in Portobello, we made the decision to try this place out based on a some recommendations, and my own curiosity having strolled past it a couple of times. On arrival we were met by a warm and chirpy fella, who showed us to our window-side table. The interior was simple, cute and cosy with a relaxed, unhurried vibe. I hadn’t expected much more than a standard seaside (well close enough) cafe, especially when I spied the ‘2 courses for 6’ menu. My appetite wasn’t too ferocious on and I felt a tad intimidated by two courses at lunchtime. So, I opted for the Black Pudding & Apple Salad, followed by the Smoked Haddock and Leek Fish Cakes. The salad was small and sufficient, with just the right amount of salty black pudding pieces to match the warm, sweet apple chunks. The ball shaped fish cakes were tasty with a nice inner texture, and came accompanied by tartare sauce and a small salad, coated in just the right amount of dressing. My friend had the same main, but chose the Creamy Garlic Mushrooms on Toast with she praised too.All in all, a really nice experience. Simple, friendly and great value. I would recommend it to anyone who is in the area and wants some cheerful food served by cheerful staff. Oh and it’s BYOB which is always a bonus. I’m sure I’ll be back with a bottle next time!UPDATE: Since my review above, I have returned to Butternut Squash, this time for breakfast. If you’re looking for amazing, substantial Scottish breakfast then this will not disappoint. The 11 item breakfast with toast and tea/coffee (with 3 refills) was ridiculously good value at just 5.50 and I enjoyed every single thing on the plate; there’s usually something on your fry up plate which isn’t exactly to your taste but this wasn’t the case. The service was perfect again, this time from a lovely young girl with red hair who shared laughs with us over my other half’s multiple extra breakfast items he ordered. Extras are 50p – I ordered a lorne sausage, as if I didn’t have enough animal products on my plate!I really love this place. It wasn’t just the wee potato face on my plate who was smiling after this breakfast experience 😀 thechaoticscot.com
