Good quality Malaysian in a basic setting. Very reasonable prices. Meals came out very promptly. Only downfall was the roti was not house made. Noodles were exceptional though.

If you’re looking for a quiet, old-world, homely restaurant away from the bustle, this is the place. This small restaurant run by a couple, serves some great Malaysian food.I’d like to taste their chicken curry rice and chicken red curry again if I return to Edinburgh.

If I do miss home then this is definitely the place that I’ll be coming to. The fried rice is awesome. Tasty and spicy just how I like it. It comes in a really really generous portion. So if you don’t like eating too much, one portion is good for sharing. I also like their Big bowl choices. My favorite is the Tom Yum Big Bowl with Udon. The taste of the Tom Yum soup is not as authenthic as Thai’s Tom Yum, but it’s great. And don’t miss their Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry/beef. It’s delicious!

Kampong Ah Lee doesnt fail to stand out because of its bright red exterior and walk-in you must. This place is a hidden Malaysian delight and if you are in the mood for something spicy. The interior is unpretentious and simple, with scattered seating and a comfortable lull present in the restaurant at all times because of how popular the place must be. I must say that I made a mental note multiple times during the course of my dinner to come back here again.Again, this might not be the perfect choice for you if your spice-threshold isnt high but I still cannot get over how flavoursome and aromatic the food was. I opted for the Big Bowl of Tom Yum Rice Noodle and Sea Bass. My first reaction to the arrival of the dish was of utter joy because of how hungry I was at the time and how huge the portion was. Once I dug in, I couldnt stop eating, literally till I couldnt move. It had the right hint of lemongrass, light and slippery rice noodles and fresh Sea Bass and spice. Again, I did notice people around me at the other tables drinking glass after glass of water, tearing up and coughing a lot but not giving up still; its all worth it! What did put a damper on the experience was the Cold Malaysian Milo. The waitress put it across as being a cold version of Hot Chocolate but what it turned out to be was a watered down lukewarm chocolate water. Quite terrible. In a nutshell: This would be my go-to place for a wholesome and filling meal in Edinburgh, even though it has the most un-assuming look from the outside.
