Good fun, nice seating and atmosphere, toes a good line between casual and formal, great selection of gins and cocktails! Fun service, very helpful, and all round nice experience. Best enjoyed as a pre-dinner drink, before heading to one of the many great restaurants nearby.

I’m generally loath to eat in a hotel restaurant – no atmosphere, over-cooked meat and soggy vegetables – not at One Square. After a couple of gins at their specialist gin bar (and more than one dish of deliciously smokey almonds) my dining partner and I were very pleasantly surprised by not only the standard of cooking, but the imaginative flair of this modern looking restaurant. The crab cake starter was a real hit – the only fault we could find was presentation – which was rapidly overlooked when I realised this was because it was nearly 100% crab, with none of the usual additions to slyly (or stupidly) stretch out the ingredients. My dining partner chose the monkfish scampi, which was soft and succulent with not a trace of oil in sight. The tangy lime mayonnaise was a perfect accompaniment. For the main course I chose the lamb Wellington and was delighted to find tender pieces of pink lamb hidden inside the crispy pastry. My dining partner chose the venison, which was also beautifully tender. We shared a side salad, which was so fresh we wouldnt have been surprised if there was a garden hidden behind the kitchen. The dishes at One Square are generous, but refusing the offer of pudding would have meant missing out on another recommendation, so we valiantly ordered a citrus fruit jelly with gin and tonic sorbet. The fruit was refreshing and tangy and I confess to being mystified by the fact that the grapefruit didn’t over power the dish. The After Eight bomb has to be seen – a glorious sphere of chocolate slows dissolves as hot chocolate sauce is poured over it to reveal a light and subtly minty almost mousse-like ice cream. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and the view of the Castle and The Usher Hall added to the evening.Wed struggle to criticise of our evening and will definitely be returning, especially for their pre-theatre supper offers when we next visit the Usher Hall or Filmhouse.
